The career chosen for this research paper is applications software developer. An application software developer is one whose primary role is to modify existing software to correct errors, to allow it to adapt to new hardware, and to improve its performance. An applications software developer also develops and directs software system venting and validation procedures, programming and documentation. Other duties performed on a regular basis include, but are not limited to, conferring with system analysts, engineers, and programmers to design systems and to obtain information on project limitations and capabilities, analyzing user needs and software requirements to determine feasibility of design within the time and cost constraints, and designing and developing software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models. Although not done as often, an applications software developer is responsible for storing, retrieving, and manipulating data for analysis of system capabilities and requirements, for consulting with customers about software system design and maintenance, for supervising the work of programmers, technologists, and technicians, for coordinating software system installation, for monitoring equipment function to ensure specifications are met, and of obtaining and evaluating information on factors such as reporting formats required, costs, and security needs. A person in this career needs to be very skilled in doing their job or they risk being fired. The skills that are extremely important for this career are reading comprehension, active listening, writing, speaking, mathematics, critical thinking, and monitoring.
