Language B, Hindi - SL
1. Course description
Hindi Language has been one of the most popular Indian languages among students and this course emphasize the development of the four skills – listening , speaking , reading and writing and use communicative teaching methods . These skills are developed through the study and use of a range of written and spoken texts. Language B Hindi - SL course requires students to have some knowledge of and experience with the language and students are expected to have their linguistic skills and to understand and use language in sophisticated ways. For example, students to be able to discuss abstract concepts and ideas in the target language. The language B syllabus approaches the learning of language through meaning. Through the study of the core and the option at SL, students built the necessary skills to reach the assessment objectives of the language B course through the expansion of the receptive, productive and interactive skills.

2. (i) Core topics: There are three topics in the core. These three topics are compulsory at SL. a. Communication and media: How people interact, transmit and gather data for the purposes of information and entertainment. * advertising

* bias in media
* censorship
* internet
* mail
* press
* radio and television
* sensationalism in media
* telephone

b. Global issues: Current matters and future scenarios that have an impact at a regional, national and/or international level, bearing in mind that they need to be addressed from the perspective of the target language’s culture. * drugs

* energy reserves
* globalization
* international economy
* migration (rural-urban, or international)
* poverty and famine
* racism, prejudice, discrimination
* the effect of man on nature
* the environment and sustainability

c. Social relationships: How people interrelate and behave- as member of a community, individually and in groups. * language and cultural identity, or self-identity
* linguistic dominance
* multilingualism
* nationalism, patriotism, fanaticism
* social behaviours and stances
* taboos verses what is socially acceptable

(ii). Option topics: There are two topics in the options. a. Cultural diversity: The ethnic, gender, racial, ideological, and socio-economic varieties within a community of the target language. * beliefs

* culinary heritage
* how culture is learned
* intercultural assimilation
* the concepts of human beauty
* verbal and non-verbal communication

b. Science and technology: The relationship between science and technology, and their impact on a community of the target language. * ethics and science
* ethics and technology
* impact of information technology on society
* natural sciences
* scientific research
* social sciences

Core
There are three topics in the core.
• Communication and media
• Global issues
• Social relationships
These three topics are compulsory at SL and HL. Students are required to study at least two aspects from each core topic.
