Religion and equality Biblical teaching about equality: The Roles of Men and Women: God created man in his own image (Bible) - This can be read in two ways – either that God deliberately created man and woman as different and separate OR that men and women are equal because God made both. There is neither . . . male nor female (Bible) - This would seem to refer to equality of the sexes before God. God does not see any difference between the sexes. Wives should submit to their husbands in everything (Bible). Is St. Paul contradicting his letter (above)? Racial Harmony: Whatever you want people to do to you, you must do to them also (Bible) - This is the idea that Christians should not discriminate against others. The parable of the Good Samaritan (Bible) - Jesus is suggesting that the people should consider everyone their neighbour and show care for them. God does not show favouritism (Bible) - In this story, St. Peter (a Jew) is friends with the Roman Cornelius (a gentile). This was something forbidden by Jewish custom at that time. Christian attitudes towards racism - Martin Luther King (MLK): In 1955, Martin worked with Rosa Parks, Jessie Jackson and Ralph Abernathy to rebel against the segregation in Montgomery, Alabama. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott where they stopped using buses because they were segregated. MLK’s protest was non-violent from start to finish – following the teaching of Jesus. In 1956 the Montgomery Bus Company stopped segregating buses as the law changed and it was made illegal (due to impact that the bus boycott had) MLK was a very effective leader because of powerful speeches. He was often imprisoned and physically attacked as well as having his home bombed. He also gained a lot of support because of his non-violence from people such as President John F. Kennedy. In 1963 he led a march of ¼ million people in Washington which caused further changes in the law – this was when he gave his famous “I have a dream…” speech. Different...
