Society in the digital age.

Today electronics are in everything. Look around you no matter where you are you can most likely see this; traffic lights, automated drive through responses, digital billboards, automatic doors, tracing device chips in your pets, automatic soap dispensers, people on their smart phones, working, playing angry birds, or tending their facebook farms. And when is the last time you called a company and talked to a person? Everyone uses electronics everywhere we go and most of the time we don't even notice it. With all the technology of this day and age are we loosing touch with people in reality? Are we more concerned with our online lives than our physical?

Many people in today's society are constantly distracted from their surrounding and what is really going on around them because they are constantly consumed by digital media. Look at all the TVs in stores and restaurants, I would guess about 70% have at least one TV. I use my smartphone GPS to get me everywhere, and I think it is safe to say most all of us do. Think about the typical day of an American college student for example; an alarm clock to wake us up, probably an app on our smartphone. Then the automatic timer on our coffee machine has insured we have our caffeine ready. We get in our cars, which mostly have computerized engines in them these days, and we plug in our smartphone or ipod and listen to music on our way to class. Once there we pull out our laptop “to take notes” or at least that is the excuse used to brows the internet during class and tweet to all our friends how much we don't want to be there. Ana Dobrilovic noted that “many students update statuses and tweet while in the middle of a lesson, in the hallways or at lunch. Although it may not seem like a big deal then, it distracts you from what you’re learning and you may miss out later on when struggling to understand what was taught.” (paragraph 3) After class we use our smartphone to inform our syber...
