Family
I have a very mixed family. My mom and my dad got married and had me soon after. They separated when I was about two so their separation was all I’ve ever known. It continued to change for me when I got a little sister but not another dad. Then my mom met my step dad and he had three children of his own. So I had two new brothers and a sister! Meanwhile my dad was in a relationship and then they had my little brother (and they got married after)! Then my mom had a boy and two years later, she had my little sister. My mom was by herself so before she met my stepdad we lived with my nana. We didn’t have a lot of money now that I look back on it, but I didn’t know. I always had everything I needed. After my mom married my step dad we were pretty well off. My dad has always worked in tile so it had been up and down income but I was always happy. We did a lot of things because of my grandparents’ income, such as; vacations and overdone weekends when I would visit. Things changed and I don’t talk to my grandparents anymore. My dad gets help from his mom and her husband but that’s a whole different story. I didn’t treat past boyfriends well because of this incident growing up but don’t worry I learned good things too. My mom is the best mom in the world. She taught me manners, and independence. Once I graduated high school, everything I soon had was earned. Once getting into the work field I realized that the way I carried myself, my manners and politeness were well appreciated. I’ve landed every job I’ve ever wanted post interview process and have made progress in every position than when I first started a job. I know I can thank my mom for that.

Community
My community size has differed throughout my life. When I was younger I moved around a lot. I never had any sense of community ever. The community I am in now I’ve been in for seven years and I don’t know my neighbors names, and to be quite honest some are a little creepy. There is no trust in our community especially now that we all kind of just sleep at home. I don’t read into how much it affected me, I really just like enjoying my family. I have a pretty big one so it’s fun but when I need to get away, I have friends and a boyfriend only half an hour drive.
School
I’ve been in many different types of schools from homeschooling to private. One of my teachers being a mom really influenced me because well, she’s my mom and I want to be just like her. I do like that I experienced so many different types of schools. I am able to make friends quickly wherever I go but I also don’t get too attached. Even then I hung around more of the popular girls group, the group that all the boys talked about and liked, wherever I went. I was never really bullied, if I was it was from boys in JR high who asked me out a week later. It never affected me because even at that age I knew we were all young and it would only be temporary. I never really knew people were ‘bullied’. I could never relate to it. I acted the same around the kids I knew who were in the special education system to people who weren’t and it stayed the same through high school.
Religious Views
My mom and step dad are Christian. My mom converted to Christianity when she met my step-dad. She was never a strong Catholic but I know she was married in the Catholic Church with my dad. My dad and my step mom were never really involved with church, I think my dad believes but it isn’t spoke of except one time. His mom and my ex grandfather were really involved in the church and strong believers. They were Christian and always pushes my dad and my step mom to go to church and to bring Brandon, my little brother. After something happened I fell away from my faith because I didn’t believe in something they preached. I stayed indifferent throughout high school because that is how my dad is, who I lived with for a while in high school. I found God again after my second car accident when I was in a very low state.
Peer Group
When I got to peer group it was a little hard for me. I wish I had stayed close with some of my friends but I left them right after high school because I don’t stay places, not that I don’t like to but because it’s what I’m used to. I met my closest friends in high school. I don’t talk to anyone I met in elementary or JR high. My girlfriends influence me to have fun because I get caught up in other things. I need them sometimes when I need to step away from life. I honestly I had went to JR high with them and met them sooner because I love them so much and just to have that much more stories with them.
Organizations/Clubs/Sports
I was never in any organizations really. I think that influenced me a lot. I wish I had. I wish my mom had put me in more after school activities. I would see my friends in uniforms and playing food in their games. I was never really good at sports and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that when I was younger I was never shown anything. It kind of affected me but I am content with who I turned out to be. Although now that I am older I still don’t have a single hobby. I was in and out of dance classes when I was younger but that’s about it and this summer I plan on taking a class or two.
Media
I was a Disney child. I still watch Disney movies because they are still my absolute favorite. I still want to one day be a Disney Princess at Disneyland. I always say Disney phrases especially to my sister. We say, “Shame on you! Shame on your cow!” from Mulan. Also, “Okay byeeeeeee…” from Frozen and much more. I would watch Disney Channel and the “pretty” girls influenced the way I dressed. I never watched anything inappropriate so when I went to high school, I was like a deer in headlights my first year in. I’m also not scared of much. I realized that came from never watching scary movies at a young age. My boyfriend gets creeped out when it’s dark, by dolls, noises, and where I live because it reminds him of “The Hills Have Eyes”. I realized that this is because his parents let him watch that kind of stuff when he was younger.
Era
A big thing that happened growing up was 9/11. Before 9/11 I never had a grasp on the world that we all didn’t get along. After 9/11 I started to understand political views, it really opened my eyes to government. Technology has grown fast in the era in which I grew up. When I was younger I didn’t see cell phones in everyone’s hand, or so close by but I do now. I remember having a cell phone going into high school and I remember that my cell phone was one of the main ways I communicated with my first boyfriend. I wouldn’t have had gave my daughter a cell phone looking back if she were my age.
Other
Other than that, I am really good at getting jobs, the interview process, not actually the job itself. When I graduated from high school I had to pay my own bills so I was quickly forced into the work force. I like that I am able to get a job quickly on my capability to sell myself well. I had a really good mother who loved me enough to not baby me so that I would be a successful woman and I pay all of my graduate to her.

Peck explains the word "community" as something that we tend to overuse without ever truly understanding it; almost making it meaningless. We have a tendency to relate ourselves to our neighbors, without having ever actually talked to them. I recently moved into a rental house close to school. I have been living there a few months and have only so much as spoken to one of my neighbors. This one neighbor, coincidentally, happens to be my landlord. While geographically this is an area where many people and I have…

A community is a place where people around supposed to be able to live and thrive together. When one thinks of a community, the image that most likely is visualized is one of a place where each person lives harmoniously with all the other members of that community. While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a high quality of life.…

Hi Yvette, I believe you have a great neighborhood community experience, your explanation of a community totally make sense to me. Indeed, a community needs trust, helping hand and a sense of security, otherwise many people will not be deciding to join a community. Besides the blood-related family, a community is pretty much like a second home for its members. Therefore, the members of a community are usually able to relate and communicate among themselves. Personally, I like those passionate/enthusiastic and positive members in a community because they make a community stays competitive, expanding and furtherance of the knowledge. Yvette, what is your suggestion for a newbie in a community? Do you think he/she should be actively offering help…

    1) Government officials pay close attention to public opinion polls and other measures of public opinion because of several reasons. First of all, public opinion polls represent an opportunity for government officials to view a snapshot of public opinion. Secondly, public opinion polls allow government officials to see the attitudes of individuals regarding political subjects. Even though Government officials pay close attention to public opinion poll, most politicians deny that they pay any attention to polls because they believe that public opinion polls do not reflect the real opinion of the public.…

When growing up with a big and spread out family, home life tends to be a little erratic. Since my mother was not the best of children, she had a few boyfriends in her time. She had my sister when she was six-teen, and my brother and I when she was around twenty. My biological father supported her until they both decided that they needed to go their separate ways, and she then married my step father. My family at the time consisted of my parents, my six-teen year old sister, my twin brother, and myself at age eleven. I had always thought of my family as pretty close to perfect until people started to talk. I first learned of this by my neighbor-friend’s mother, who whispered to her kid about why I had to leave every other weekend to visit my “other” father. I had never before thought of this as a strange idea, so I asked my sister about it. She told me our mother’s story. Once my mother learned of this, she was not upset with me for asking so many questions, and for that I’m glad. I learned more about my mother that day and I respected her for recognizing her past mistakes. Since she had, what I think to be, a pretty messed up life before; she corrected that and raised her children to be respectable people.…

Sarah’s upbringing in such an affluent household meant that she was held to a certain level of standards and is expected to act a specific way according to the way her parents have brought her up. She is a bright and smart girl, which is shown in the fact that she exemplifies exceptional grades and is taking a majority of honors classes. The profile we were given about Sarah did not specify the type of friends that she had previously, which could be speculated that she did not have very many friends. Meeting these new girls, who showed interest in gaining a friendship with Sarah caused her to question her good judgment when it came to obeying the rules set forth by her parents, which she followed in the past. She has never missed her curfew in the past.…

If you open up google and type in “definition of community” and hit enter three main definitions pop up. The first says “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” This can include family, a church, inmates in jail, people in a neighborhood, soldiers, and the list goes on. The second definition that pops up is a little more intimate definition, “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” The reason these definitions are relevant is to clarify that communities…

I decided for my social observation the mall would be a good place to start. I came there on a Friday evening when there should be plenty of people to watch. I also sat in the Barnes and Noble café after that to observe. I expected to see a lot of people shopping and conversing. A few things did stand out to me within the few hours I was there. Some things I didn’t expect to see. We are expected to behave a certain way in public determined by our culture as to what is acceptable. Some people stay well within the lines while some might stray outside the norms but never too far typically. Usually the ones to travel to the extremes are adolescents and teenagers. This is what I observed.…

My Name is april june and I am 21 years old. I was born right at the crack of dawn on September 3rd 1992 in MA. Currently, I still live in Worcester just up the block from Worcester State University. I attend Quinsigamond Community College and at the moment I am in General Studies taking general classes to help get my GPA up until I figure out what I would like to do for the rest of my life. I live in a pretty averaged size apartment with just my mother Angel. I am the “baby” of two older sisters named Danielle and Amanda. One of them just recently getting engaged and ready to start her life, and the other one has three children the youngest being one years old. My mother and father separated when I was about two years old so I was raised by my mother, father and step mother while growing up. Both of my parents completed high school and never went to college so they were not the type of parents who pushed college careers nor did they have any sort of fund for us to be able to go. Of course after high school when I decided to attend college, they are very proud and supportive for me to finish. When I began college, my mom also went back to college after seeing me and my sister do it, and she got a health and human service degree at the age of 40. My parents came from middle class families and on my mothers side, very few of my family members were college graduates. We often had no spending money or even good running vehicles but they always gave us love and we were happy with all of the small things we had. My parents used the permissive parenting style, at least for me and my sister; they never really used any type of punishments. They would tell us we were grounded from something but the next day we would be doing the things we were grounded from. We were always nurtured and my parents were easy t...…
