Have you ever noticed how few people now days seem to have good social skills? There is alot of talk about how isolated the average person is and how many of us are communicating only through instant messaging, e-mail, and Internet chat rooms or in a work setting where conversations are scripted. The act of face-to-face conversation where we look at each other in the eye and discuss our interest and dreams seems to be gone. I notice many people are together but talking to someone else on the phone or Internet. Sometime the elimination of face-to-face conversation can impact your personal relationship. Face to face communication is mostly surface talk and it is true that the social graces are definitely lacking and people interrupting each other is definitely happening more often. I find that most conversations are based on who is the best at "whatever", who has the most expensive, who ate at the best restaurant, who went on the best vacation, and who drives the best car. I think you get what I am trying to say. Social skills are like any other skill in that they don’t come easily. You have to work at them everyday and put a lot of thought and effort into them. That means that you think about each conversation that you just had and reflect on it. How did it make you feel? How did the other person react to you? How would you have liked it to go better? Then you think about ways you can improve, and then try harder next time. Another way to improve your social skills is to watch other people. What do they do? What do they say? Are they successful in getting people to listen to and respect them? Why? We start developing social skills from the time we are born. An infant gives social smiles. As we grow older, we learn how to interact with family and friends. We also learn or are faced with the problems that come with poor social skills.
