On January 30th, 2013, we had an in class activity which required us, class mates who do not know much about each other, to break off into randomly organized groups of three or four people each. Each group was assigned a blocked off floor space in which the other groups could not cross over. Without surly knowing the back stage agenda of the activity, we were instructed to use paper and tape to construct a tower to stand from the floor to the ceiling. Much easier said than done, I assure you. Not only did the tower have to reach the ceiling but it also had to stand alone or a specified amount of time. Once a group was close to completing the task at hand, the other groups were permitted to blow air, wave objects and even throw paper air planes to interfere with the succeeding groups’ progress. Some groups went as far as pausing their own task’s progress to interrupt the progress of others. While the class activity may have seemed simple and fun, the social process exhibited included but were not limited to assimilation, accommodation, co-operation, competition and conflict.
Assimilation, defined as the process in which individuals once dissimilar become similar based on interests and outlook. The group I became a part of was made of four other members from our class. Still to this day, I do not know their names or personal histories - clearly an example of individuals being dissimilar. Each one of us needed to quickly adapt to one another, lay a game plan down, and come up with alternatives and roles for each to play. We had no time for introductions or distractions as we were in competition with many other groups. The assimilation during this activity may have not been complete however, the idea of it was complete enough for the purpose of successfully coming together in attempt to complete our in class activity assignment.
