Social Media for Business Communication

a) Evaluate the usefulness of social media in communication and decision making for an organization with which you are familiar.
I have limited information on the effectiveness of social media at the City of Cleveland. During the interview with Ms. Johnson, she stated:
“While working for the City of Cleveland, social media plays a major role in how our organization effectively communicate to our stakeholders. Information that needs to be communicated effectively and efficiently has done by way of web, with the City of Cleveland website, which provides our stakeholders with an abundance of information. The City of Cleveland also use social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as their communication channel to reach our stakeholders to provide information as well” ( Johnson, 2013).
“Prior to social media being as popular as it is today, communication was provided by regular U.S. mail, email blast and through community newsletters, which was very costly to the City’s budget. Now with communicating through electronic means, information is provided more effectively and by a faster means. Electronic communication is also forwarded to other stakeholders by sending a link in an email that is directly transmitted to other stakeholders to inform them of curtain information as well” (Johnson, 2013).
I find this to be credible, because I receive newsletters regarding things like; trash pick-up, new recycling trash cans and what’s going on in the Cleveland area. I also, receive newsletters form the Mayor, called the Mayor’s action line. Being in the community, when there is a crisis I like to know what is going on in my city.
Strengths of the interview
• They communicate with the community.
• Their website have a lot of information.
• Use of the career opportunities.
• Community awareness.
Weaknesses of the

As someone who would be considered to be ‘old school’ by the members of today’s “Digital Age”, I have assimilated / adapted and learned how to take full advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to me. Nowadays, thanks to social media, anyone who has the desire, can have a voice. Social media has become an integral part of our everyday lives. We find and share our new favorite clothing and food brands on blogs; we meet people with similar interests on Facebook; we get our news in one sentence on Twitter; we share a picture of that fabulous crawfish etoufee we had at a restaurant while visiting New Orleans during our vacation on Instagram; and we can even find our future husband or wife on dating sites. We have an amazing ability to be connected, stay in-the-know and share our own interests, ideas and opinions on just about everything.…

The Red Cross has also begun using the evolving technological resources provided by social networking and wireless communications to make volunteering and donation more efficient. “Results show that practicing public relations through social media is effective and necessary in the emerging digital age, as shown through the Red Cross’ development of a two-way dialogue with younger constituents, the media, and the community. This two-way dialogue has been accomplished primarily through Twitter and Facebook, with barriers such as lack of staff and time, and opportunities to improve National Headquarters and local chapter relations.” The insights shared by the American Red Cross are useful for both public relations scholars and professionals to help them understand and apply social media practices to build strong, lasting relationships. These tools can also help improve and continue to strengthen the management of disasters in real time. This would justify revamping the IT systems. Building a communication network between the local chapters and the national headquarters would improve the ability to relay real time information regarding the need in the event of disaster and to improve the quality of service it provides as related to the blood donation efforts. This was a noted difficulty…

On the one hand, technology and digital media can be a great help to reach out to other people and spread your message to a very large platform. The session "How to be a digital influencer" this past Thursday was analyzing exactly this question, and introduced various platforms and strategies on how to use the digital world to your advantage. "Social media removes all distances: geographic, social, hierarchical. You can reach anyone, at any time, and communicate in real time.
