There are thousands of social media networks available to anyone who wants to get involved. Out of the all the social media networks out there, according to eBiz MBA, as of August 2012 the top 3 most used and most popular social media networks are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Facebook being the number one social media network is a social network website that was launched in February of 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg who owns Facebook, Inc. Facebook has over 900 million active users which more than half of them use Facebook through a mobile device such as an Android Smart Phone. Individuals must register before using Facebook and they must be at least the age of 13 or older, but once they do they have access to the world’s largest social network available where they can create a personal profile, add photos or videos, add other users as friends which usually consist of family, or close friends, but can include anyone from around the world. Friends are added through “invites” sent to other users who have the option to accept or deny the invite. Users can exchange messages or chat with each other and notifications are sent when a profile has been updated. Individuals that have a Facebook account may join common interest groups that can be organized by anyone but usually consist of workplaces, schools or colleges, or other characteristics and categories.
Twitter is the second largest social media network available. Twitter is a social media network and a micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets". Twitter was created in March of 2006 by Jack Dorsey and then launched in July of 2006.
