Company Overview

About Trader Horn
Trader Horn is a company that is deeply rooted in the recent history of western Pennsylvania, specifically in the Butler and North Hills areas. The business, initially opened under the name “Warehouse Sales,” was founded in 1958 by Butler, Pennsylvania native Robert Greenberger with the intention of it being the area’s first “Original Idea Discount Store.” Over the next decade, the original store, which was primarily a feed supply outlet, achieved great success and became a favorite among local residents. It is still in operation in the Prospect area.

In 1973, Greenberger decided expand his business to include a second store located in the Greater Butler Mart and call it Trader Horn, named after a book published in 1927. The third store, located in Penn Township, opened in 1978. From there, the company expanded to the North Hills area of Pittsburgh, Eau Claire, Grove City, Ellwood City, Kittanning and Clarion.

The chain offers a simple, no frills approach to selling a large inventory of plumbing, hardware, electrical, automotive supplies, paint, sporting goods, lawn and garden supplies, small appliances, pet and cleaning supplies, home-related products, snacks and popular food items.

Online Presence
At the present time, the Trader Horn company has a limited and ineffective online presence. The company relies heavily on its website, www.traderhornstores.com, as a means to publish a PDF version of its weekly sales flyer, communicate with its customers using an “Email Us” icon located below a list of departments in the stores, provide a rudimentary map that describes the locations of each of the stores in the chain, and share the address, phone number, and fax number of the headquarters of the company in Butler, Pennsylvania. Although the website serves as the platform through which the company shares most of its information and does some of its advertising, the website is rarely updated and the clickable links that lead to the descriptions of the departments offer no system through which potential customers can search through the company’s inventory. In addition, the company has no active social media accounts and does a majority of its advertising by mailing flyers to customers in local magazines like The Penny Saver and by featuring it as a PDF file on its...
