Social media has become popular in the society as seen today. It is a form of electronic communication which allows communities to share information, ideas and news online. It consists of a set of technologies and channels that are targeted at forming and enabling a massive community of participants to collaborate productively (Anthony 2010). Social media such as Twitter helps to connect businesses to customers in real-time and update of latest information. With organisation in a Multinational Corporation such as Singapore Press Holdings Ltd (SPH), social media plays an important part as it is a social instrument of communication. Singapore Press Holdings Ltd consist of two media powerhouses- Singapore Press Holdings Group and Schibsted Group. The two companies headquarter are located in Singapore and Norway that derives a quarter of its revenue respectively (Patrick 2010). Therefore social media has become a platform for global business landscape. In this essay, an analysis of how twitter can be used to improve knowledge sharing, build social capital, support innovation and aid problem solving can be an advantage and disadvantage in SPH.

Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) is Southeast Asia’s leading media organisation that engages minds and enrich live across multiple languages and platforms. SPH published newspaper in four different languages and produces more than 100 magazine titles in Singapore and the region, covering a wide range of interest from lifestyle to information technology (Benn 2009). Online media of SPH such as Stomp, omy.sg and The Straits Times RazorTV has become more accessible to the public. This helps to maintain people’s interest by updating of the latest news via websites. With its mission “to inform, educate and entertain”, social media such as twitter will be an advantage to this organisation as it will be able to communicate with different departments by updating through twitter.
Social media which is an instrument on communication incorporates online technology and methods to allow people to share content, personal opinions, perspective and insights into world issues and generally discuss the evolution of media in itself (Lyndsay 2007). It shares most of the following characteristics such as participation, openness, conversation, community and connectedness in which SPH can use it to communicate within their department. Participation in social media encourages more contribution and feedback from people who are interested in the latest news or update. There are rarely any barriers commenting and sharing of information and it uses traditional media to broadcast social media in a two-way conversation. This allows communities to form quickly and communicate effectively by sharing common interest, such as political issue, latest movie or television programs and linking it to sites, resources and people (Antony 2008). Twitter is commonly used as a social media; it gives a real-time information network that helps to connect to the latest information and news. It is considered one of the fastest ways to share information with people and a chance to reach and engaged to others. By exchanging of information, it can also help to create a positive global impact (Jack 2011). Such social network will allow SPH to update latest news through twitter. Staff in the organisation will be able to get first-hand information. The advantage of having twitter is to constantly engage with the staff and to ensure a close network of connections within the organisation (Venkat 2009). With twitter, it is possible to target a specific niche by following others from the industry and thus building contacts within it by receiving feedbacks in a casual and cost effective manner (Singh 2009).
