Social media is at its, more basic sense, a shift in how people discover, read, and share news and information and content. It’s a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologue (one to many) into dialogue (many to many). It can be different for some people as it is based upon theory of how one looks at it. First can be, social media describes the online tools that the people used to share content profiles, opinions, insights experiences, perspectives and media itself, thus facilitating conversation and interaction online between groups of people. Those tools include blogs, message boards, podcasts, micro blogs, life streams, bookmarks, networks, communities, and wikis. A few prominent examples of social media applications are Wikipedia (reference), Myspace and facebook (social networking), Twitter and jaikue (presence apps), YouTube (video sharing), Digg and Reddit (news aggregation), Flicker (photo sharing), Blog TV (line casting), Izimi and pounce (media sharing) and world of warcraft (online gaming). Second can be, Social media is the democratization of content and understanding of the role people play in the process of not only reading and disseminating information, but also how they share and create contents for others to participate. It is a shift from a broadcast mechanism to a many model, rooted in a conversational for not between authors and people. Through the phrase above, Brian Sollis is connecting on the market strategy and how it has been changed during few decades and how it can be developed through social media. There has been a fundamental shift in our culture and it has created a new landscape of influences and an entirely new ecosystem for supporting the socialization of information-thus facilitating new conversations that can start locally, but have a global impact.
