ABSTRACT The thesis is a site based issue, which deals with a well known mosque; Masjid Jamek Kuala Lumpur which is located at the meeting point of Sg. Gombak and Sg. Klang (not to be mistaken for the Masjid Jamek located in Kg. Bharu). The premise together with its surroundings also has a well known history of, as you guess it; flash flood problems.
With increasingly unpredictable environmental conditions and the prevalence of flash floods and catastrophic storms, building safe and secure flood-proof structures is becoming even more vital. Floods often come up quickly with almost no warning, so it’s imperative to have safe and secure designs, especially in places known for flooding. Even regions that are not known for rising waters can be taken by surprise.
As mentioned above, one of the main issues that the mosque faces is flash floods due to the overflow of the two rivers during heavy rains. This resulted in damage of properties, whilst the flood also brings in all sorts of rubbish and waste onto the site which affects the surrounding’s cleanliness resulting in an eyesore and foul smells. Flash floods are considered to be dangerous as it can cause severe injuries and in some cases death. Other than the overflow of water, the mosque is in need of a further expansion due to the lack of facilities, security and space to cater for the capacity of muslims during Friday prayers.
