Social Media Assessment: Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is a new television series currently running on the FOX network. Airing on September 16, Sleepy Hollow is a modern twist on Washington Irving’s classic tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Ichabod Crane, played by actor Tom Mison, is a revolutionary soldier “resurrected” in the present-day town of Sleepy Hollow along with his foe, the Headless Horseman. The show explores the legend of the Apocalypse, with Ichabod and his companion Lieutenant Abbie Mills, played by actress Nicole Beharie, as the two witnesses who must try and stop the coming of the Four Horseman and the end of the world. Sleepy Hollow has only been on air for three months with a total of 9 episodes but seems to already have a loyal following, similar to the creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci former serialized sci-fi show Fringe. The show is filmed primarily in Wilmington, North Carolina by 20th Century Fox Television and has already been renewed for a second season in 2014. Sleepy Hollow, like all FOX television shows, has accounts on the three main social media websites: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Facebook definitely has the most following with over 100,000 followers. Twitter comes in second with almost 60,000 followers and Instagram in last place with less than 3,000 followers. The Facebook page regularly posts pictures, previews and various articles throughout the week, though most coming from the day leading up to a new episode. The Twitter account @SleepyHollowFOX also tweets regularly with the consistent hashtags of #sleepyhollow for the show and #sleepyheads for its fans. Instagram is used infrequently with only 55 posts total and most pictures acting as a preview for that night’s episode. In addition to these three main sites, Sleepy Hollow also has its official website on FOX and various video clips on the FOX YouTube channel.     Irving's Ichabod develops a cowardice persona from the audience as his superstitious beliefs come from unproven stories, in comparison to Burton's Ichabod, the audience is position to favor the character as his fears originate from his sympathetic past in which he is trying to forget. The original Ichabod is a school teacher who is constantly reading supernatural books and stories and due to his credulity, he superstitiously believes everything he is told: "Cotton Mather's 'History of New England Witchcraft,' in which, by the way, he most firmly and potently believed." (Moses and Irving, 1995) Due to his constant fears, his gullible belief in the Headless Horseman causes him to flee Tarry Town in which emanates his cowardice - causing the audience to view him as the coward he is within the text. However within the film, Ichabod is presented as an investigator similar to Sherlock Holmes in which many modern audiences' love. Rather than credulity, Ichabod is interested in scientific causes, and justice, "by pathology,... I will need to examine the body." (Sleepy Hollow, 1999) His vast collection of self invented equipment and notebooks further support his portrayal as more scientific than naive. His fears originate from his past as Ichabod is often haunted by flashbacks of his father and memories of his mother: "By a Bible-Black tyrant behind a mask of righteousness. I was seven when lost my faith." (Sleepy Hollow, 1999), therefore, eliciting sympathy from the audience. Similar scenes occur in both the text and film. Within the text, Ichabod's disappearance is caused by the pursuit of the Headless Horseman, evidently revealed to be Brom Bones: "Brom Bones,... was observed to look exceedingly knowing whenever the story of…
