The aim of this study is to examine the effects of sleep quality on individual’s subjective feelings of sleepiness, mood and sustained attention. The participants used were 100 Monash psychology students consisting of both males and females. The participants assessed themselves using a range of different scales and tests after what they thought to be a good night’s sleep and a bad night’s sleep. As expected, the participants performed worse and obtained lower ranks on scales of sleepiness and mood after a deprived sleep indicating that sleep quality does have an effect on these variables.
Sleep is known as an episodic disruption of the waking state essential for the survival and health of humans (Kleitman, 1987). Sleep is a consequence of changes in the equilibrium of the key neurotransmitters in the brain. Most of these neurotransmitter systems are also accountable for multiple brain functions, including those related to mood and other cognitive/emotional behaviours (Kleitman, 1987). It is well established that if an individual does not obtain sufficient quantity and/or quality of sleep than there will be a negative consequence on mood and cognitive performance (Durmer & Dinges, 2005).
Sleep and mood disorders have found to be closely linked. It is not unexpected that important connections occur between sleep and the depressed mood. Benca (2001) found a positive correlation between sleep deprivation and depression with subjects feeling tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion after a deprived night of sleep. His studies established that the fact that sleeplessness most frequently leads to a negative mood, implying a potential underlying relationship between sleep deprivation and depression. Pilcher, June, Walters and Amy (1997) also examined whether sleep deficiency considerably changes an individuals mood. Pilcher measured mood by... [continues]
