Slavery in America began from the early 17th century, a slave was someone who could be forced to work from the age of 10 or if they were not so lucky they could be slave when they were 4 years old. Many of the slaves in the North America came from the west coast of Africa. Actually, they were captured by African tribes and some of them were captured by European, and the slave would be traded to European and American merchant. In 1619 slaves ( African Americans ) were brought to Jamestown, Virginia. At the beginning they were an indentured servants instead of slaves, but at the time goes by the owner of this indentured servant saw the beneficial of having a servant without have to pay them and the master could have power among them, so he could offer whatever he want, if any of rules where broken their master would punish the slave and from this advantages they started to enslave their indentured servant. In 1793, the development of textile industry in northern area and their high demand of cotton became an opportunity for the southern who had a large cotton plantation to provide the northern needs. Because of this fact there was no way else except to add more slave to each plantation in southern area, and at that time slavery expanded rapidly.
Most of the slaves were work in southern agricultural sector. The slave didn’t work alone, they work as a group because one particular job that the master gave to them needed more power. The possibility of be treated like a normal human for a slave were a little, usually the master would push them to work till the limit. They work in the heat of the sun, the cold, the rain, the hail, the snow, and there’s nothing would stop them from working except the master of the slave asked them to stop. Slave not only did plantation things but also they did everything from being house servants, nurses, mid wives, blacksmiths, carpenters, handymen, and so on. The female slave faced the reality that they have to work double time in that time, because after they’ve done their work on the field, they had to sew and knit clothes for their families. If we talk about slavery, we will found so many immorality action toward them and that action will be easily find in many references so I’m not going to explain further about slave suffering because I believe we’ve learned about that.
After long fighting to have their freedom from the master and their unfair life, finally the slavery abolition happened. Even thought the process were not easy, because it involved many people with different point of view, different social status, different race, then there are many resistance and revolt event which resulted many people died, but the slavery had come to an end in 1865. Thanks to the abolitionist, 16th elected president “Abraham Lincoln” who raised the issue of slavery and opened many people eyes about slavery regardless his real purpose. Through this paper hopefully you (the reader) and I finally can understand better about the slavery in America and we can analyze about the development of that slavery today’s. But does the slavery thing really end by that time? And were those ex black slave fully be free as a man? Do their struggles just stop after the abolition? Is there any different between past slavery and modern slavery if it still exist? Maybe all of us still wondering about that, how is the slave live after the abolition, how are they finally can be accepted by American society, and is it real that there is no more enslavement thing in America? I don’t think so because in my opinion illegal slavery continues in the United States today. Modern slavery is often discussed in the framework of human trafficking. Let’s discuss it further about this.
The struggle of black slavery after the abolition of slavery, now we can them “black people” to have their proper live in America is not as easy as we imagine. They keep struggling to get better in their family live,...
