Skills in the Workplace
I do believe that the skills that are necessary in today’s work environment have changed with the advent of increased technology and social changes but, at the same time some of them are timeless in their respect to good business. I think that there are 5 skills that today’s employee or even employer need to be successful and stable in this economy. These aforementioned skills are Education, Adaptability, Flexibility, Patients and Honesty and apply universally to all types of work. Education is fundamental to doing a good job. More education helps one improve no only themselves but their level of work. When a person has a higher degree of education in their perspective field they have more choices available about the decisions they need to make. Education not only gives you more information about what you are attempting to do but it gives you the ability to see things in a different way. To make different choice you may not have foreseen before. Adaptability is key in many work environments. The ability to change is important in an ever changing world like today. Technology is changing at a very rapid pace. Those who knew how to do one job many times need to know how to several. For instance in the past a Radiologic Technologist did just X-ray exams in the hospital but, with the advent of digital imaging and the economic downturn, hospitals are looking for a technologist that can do X-ray, Cat Scan and or MRI. This flexibility saves the employer money and gives them an employee with more expertise. Flexibility goes hand in hand with being adaptive in a sense, Todays workers cannot afford to be too rigid in what they do. They have to give more to retain their jobs or better yet advance in their positions. Another type of flexibility that a worker needs is chronological. In a lot of instances an employee cannot always work the 9 to 5 shift. If an employer needs a spot filled or a deadline made it is in the employee’s best interest

They contribute to outcomes that are valued for individuals and for society; bring benefits in a wide variety of contexts and apply to multiple areas of life; and are of use to all individuals, deemphasizing competencies of use only in a specific trade, occupation or walk of life. Educated people can take the world into their hands and make it their own. “Knowledge is power,” and education empowers people by enabling them to lead and teach others. For instance, as a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I will be in charge of overseeing all the procedures and patients in the clinic. My employer will be looking for someone who can be a leader to the other employees: an individual with education who can be trusted to make good, informed decisions. Having an education also enables one to remain open to learning new procedures and techniques.…

Work specific skills focusing on the use of standard operating procedures for different types of laboratory equipment, the calibration of standard laboratory equipment and the use of a lab book. This was chosen as a priority for me due to these skills being an essential part of any work I wish to do in the future, working or continuing my studies with in a lab. This set of skills is relevant to my skills matrix because it is a skill I have only had the chance to develop at my 5-week placement at Intertek. This is a key skill needed for my future, thus giving me a reason to analyse in detail how I have performed and what aspects need further improvements. During my placement this skill was continually tested and developed…
