The most exciting part of any teenagers sixteenth birthday is getting their first vehicle. Many of my friends from my small town high school had already received theirs. My normally nice and easy going parents had a different point of view on this subject and they were not willing to hand me a new car without a little effort from me. I come from a very small community where everybody knows everybody and no secrets are kept quiet for long. Like most of my friends, I was pretty spoiled. Growing up in a town like this wasn’t always easy. The cliques were inseparable and the expectations from everyone were extremely high. At the time, the biggest concern I had was which shoes matched my outfit best. It wasn’t until the summer after my freshman year of high school when I began thinking about my next birthday. I was fifteen and turning sixteen in the upcoming month of August. I didn’t have a job and I wasn’t too concerned about getting one. It wasn’t until the last few days of June when I decided it was time to talk to my parents about my future car. I started the conversation with the usual “Daddy….” By saying this, he knew I was going to be asking for something from him. After minutes of talking, I bluntly asked “What kind of car am I getting for my birthday?” He laughed hysterically. I didn’t know if he was being serious or just trying to confuse me. The next words out of his mouth were “What kind of car can you afford?” When I realized he was being serious, I stormed out of the room. Later that evening, I asked my mom the same question. She explained to me that I needed to show responsibility before they would give me any money for a car. This was not how things were supposed to be. I ran to my room, slammed the door shut and went straight to bed. The very next morning I received a text message from my dad.
