Simon Birch Essay

In the movie Simon Birch, the main character is Simon. The narrator of the movie is Simon's best friend Joe Wentworth. Simon is a very special person. For example he has the ability to inspire or annoy the people around him. He also has a special sense that God has a plan for him and he would not be alive if no plan existed. When Simon was born some called him a miracle baby because he was the smallest baby ever born in that hospital. His biological parents wanted very little to do with him. With this almost hatred from his parents, Simon falls in love with Joe's mother Rebecca. She is the one who truly cared for him and loved him. Now because of his size Simon is very good at helping little kids. This is so because the kids trust someone of their own size. In the movie there were two kinds of feeling about Simon. One was that he was inspirational, the narrator. Or annoying, the Priest. There are many reasons why people found him inspirational. For example Simon helped the narrator find out who his father was, since his mom died prior to telling him. Also it was Simon’s faith in God that people were always baffled about. In the movie there were two kinds of feelings about Simon. One was that he is inspirational. The other was that he was annoying. There are many reasons why people found him inspirational. For example Simon helps Joe find out who his father is, since his mother died prior to telling him. Next was his faith in God. People were always shocked when they saw how much pure faith Simon had. For those who did not like Simon found him easy to pick on or rude. For instance Reverend Russell did not like Simon because he always question what the Reverend said about God in his sermons. Also Simon would constantly talked right back after the Reverend would talk during his sermon. In addition to the Reverend Miss Leavey, the Sunday school teacher was not too fond of Simon. She would be annoyed at Simon if he was being disruptive in class or if the class was picking on him when she was out of the room. Finally, there were the baseball teams Simon's team would face. The kids and their parents were the most rude and hostile towards Simon when he would go up to bat. This was ever so present the day Simon hit the baseball that killed Joe's mother. Finally Simon always thought that God had plan for him. Though we, the audience, never get to hear Simon’s explanation of why he thought God had a plan for him we get a glimpse from Joe. The idea is that Simon would not be alive if God did not have a plan for him. In the end of the movie Simon fulfills God's plan for him by saving a young kid from drowning. Simon has, in my opinion, a very unique faith. That of which he was grateful for each day. He was also positive and as I had perviously mentioned the thought of God having a plan for him. Simon kept with the traditions of Church, going to mass every Sunday, loving God, and being an overall good person. Tradition wise he kept going to Church, though the priest and Sunday school teacher were not Simon’s biggest fans. Furthermore he exhibited his faith in countless scenes outside of Church and the main realm of God by doing good. For me, as with many people, I do not know what God's plan or purpose for me is, but what I do know is the gifts he gave to me. Some of the gifts that I and others see are: loyalty, ability to listen, kindness, situational humility, and solidarity. With these gifts I am starting to get an idea of what God's plan is for me. I do believe that as I get older more and more parts of God's plan for me will become clear to me and I will be able to answer this question better. But for now all I can say is I am not done following God’s plan.

The symbol being examined in Simon Birch is how Simon is like Jesus in many ways. The main thing that starts this is how he plays baby Jesus in the Church pageant. This symbolizes Simon’s fate. Simon thinks he has something he is destine for because of his small height, just like Jesus was destine to die for our sins. Jesus sacrificed his…

As Ralph is sitting on the beach telling Simon about his desire to leave the island, Simon reassures Ralph that he will leave the island and be fine. Simon offers his wisdom to Ralph because he fully grasps onto the longing Ralph is feeling. Wanting to lift Ralph from that pain, he shows how gentle his heart is and how he cares for the rest of the group. Jesus also gave others his wisdom and advice, often to those seeking some direction in life. Although Simon does not attain supernatural powers, Jesus can for example, cure the blind. This allows Jesus to attend to the less fortunate and supply individuals with a sense of protection. Simon shows his powers in different ways, supplying fruit for the littluns when they cannot reach it. This gives the littluns someone to look to, as the other biguns seem to have forgotten about them. Tending to the common people, both Jesus and Simon are naturally compassionate and can sense the emotions of others well. Out of the goodness of their hearts both express their innocence in way in which they realize to do things not in spite of their guilt, but because naturally they are not morally…

He was a unique child who believed that both good and evil resided within each person. Through the story Simon acted as the Christ figure. Simon was epileptic and had E.S.P. Simon foresaw the fate of Ralph and his own. ?You?ll get back all right. I think so, anyway.? (Page 121). Simon viewed his fate and witnessed the killing of the sow. Prior to one of his seizure?s he saw his death. The Lord of the Flies spoke to him and said, ??we shall do you. See? Jack and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph?? (Page 159). Shortly before his death he came to the realization that the beast was not a creature but something that was within Jack and the hunters. He believed that he should tell the truth despite the consequences. In turn he was sacrificed for the continuation for the evil on the…

The second character trait Simon possesses is that he is devotedly faithful. He is an enormous believer of God and loves sharing his faith with other people. This is proven during various conversations with Reverend Russell and his best friend, Joe Wenteworth. When Simon is talking to the reverend, he suggests that God made him the way he is for a reason and says, “I think I'm God's instrument - that he's gonna use me to carry out his plan.” The last occurrence when Simon is faithful happens when is continually encouraging Joe to be joyful. Simon claims, “Your problem is that you have no faith.” Joe responds, “I got faith. I just need proof to back it up.” Joe is more of a pessimist and practical person therefore Simon is there hence he can cause Joe be further positive.…

-In this quote Simon expresses his thoughts about how the boys have been acting so far in the story. He believes and states that the beast isn’t anything circular, not anything that moves but just them. In a way what he says is true and this shows that Simon is a kind of person that thinks out of the box, he believes that there is a reason for everything and also an answer for all. The beliefs and thoughts of the other characters affect Simon in a more designated way than any other character probably due to the fact that he is more of a sensitive, spiritual type. The beast is becoming the most important part at this point and has begun a time of terror and evil. The beast in them is the sense of savagery, the knowledge of being able to do all they want, the advantage of being in the wild, more or less not being bossed around by anyone. The other boys received the opinion in a more ironic way and harassed him at the thought, even though it is going to come back to bit them.…

First, Simon is very faithful towards god. For example, Simon is known as a faithful person because he always believed that he was made the way he is for a special reason upcoming in the future. He also believed that god had a plan for everyone else, and most kids labeled Simon as ‘freaky’ for believing this. Simon thought even harder about the situation because nobody listened and believed what he was saying. Simon always went to his nearby church despite the repulsive people who work there and criticize him all the time. He went not because he had too, but because he wanted to know more about the secret god had for him later in life. Besides the fact that Simons parents didn’t care for going to church, Simon still went without a doubt. Simon showed great faithfulness throughout his life, besides the fact that nobody helped him figure out the real truth when he needed it the most.…

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 5:3). This beatitude was practiced by Simon throughout the movie and was shown through his thoughts, words, actions and deeds. Many who experience this beatitude feel that they have no moral riches and are in need, whereas Simon had faith which kept him going. Jesus says that, no matter your status in life, you must recognize your spiritual poverty before you can come to God in faith to receive the salvation he offers. Simon Birch is an example of a person who became closer with God because of his immense faith in him.…

In Lord of the Flies, Simon has been characterized in a sort of all seeing, knowledgeable creature. Having epilepsy, or a similar condition, was considered a holy disease, that he was connected with god because of it, he was purer than the other boys in a sense. The scene after his death really shows that. The passage describes the “clear water [that] mirrored the clear sky” and the flowing of nature around Simon. Had it been one of the other, the corrupted and savage boys, the flowing of the water, the moving of the waves, and the creatures around them would have been disturbed by the body floating there. However, Simon is simply welcomed into the water, “The water rose farther and dressed Simon’s coarse hair with brightness. The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulder became sculptured marble.” Even in death…

In comparison, there are three characters who appear to remain mostly civilized, the first of these boys being Simon. In the novel, Simon is portrayed as a religious figure. Besides his significant name along the lines of Simon Peter from the bible, he also acts as a Christ-like structure. The bible states that the Messiah, or Jesus, would be like God. This means that he is perfect and without sin or flaw. From the story, Simon depicts this figure by defending and protecting the schoolboys, much like Jesus defended and protected the christian followers from Satan and all the sins they had committed and would commit in the future. The bible tells a story of followers being judged by God. They are separated to the left and right of God and are…

He remains in solidarity, rarely speaking and gaining trust of both Jack and Ralph, who fight for the position of a leader. Simon is never aroused into violence, and manages to remain the only boy who is truly, consistently good, partly because of his nature. He remains good because his human nature is not provoked into savagery; he is simply above all the others. As for Piggy, his intellect arouses in him, a want to be heard; to spread his new and innovative ideas, instead of concealing them like Simon. Piggy represents the rational side of society, which at times makes him cold and careless of everything, except for gaining acceptance. The two represent separate parts of the deteriorating morality amongst the other boys, Piggy and Simon possess the qualities that are disregarded in the tumult of survival; Piggy is rational and intellectual, while Simon is the purity and goodness in people.…

Unlike McMurphy, Simon does not revel his isolation and instead chooses to isolate himself further by wandering into the forest wilderness and away from the rest of the group. Simon’s seizures and shyness lead to the other older boys ignoring him when he does try to talk at their meetings, even though Simon has the most insightful thoughts out of any of them. In addition to being the most insightful, Simon also experiences an altered perception of reality when he imagines “. . . Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon. . . blackness within, a blackness that spread” (Golding,143-144).When Simon walks out of the forest with the body of the dead parachutist, the boys, in a social gathering of their own, immediately kill him. By not joining the other boys in the feast, Simon highlights his social isolation. This eventually leads to his death. All of the rest of the young boys, including Ralph and Piggy take part in the feast. The only boy missing is Simon, further exemplifying to what extent his social isolation reached. In this fatal feast, which Simon does not partake in, the others brutally murder him, mistaking him for the beast. Simon’s social ostracization and therefore isolation from the other boys eventually leads to his savage murder proving that when Simon is not part of the norm, because of his frequent…
