Should people be concerned of the food they consume daily?
What exactly, is food? New Oxford Dictionary Second Edition calls it “any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink, or that plants absorb, in order to maintain life and growth.” That doesn’t help so much unless you define nutritious. Nutritious food, it says here, “provides those substances necessary for growth, health, and good condition.” Many people nowadays does not too concerned on the food they consume. According to the article ‘is our food safe’ state only a few number of customers reading food label when grocery shopping and it shows that general public awareness on food safety is quite low. Furthermore, people are not too concerned how food is stored, handled or cooked as long as the food is delicious, they just eat it. Many people mistakenly believe that the food they consumed is safe and healthy to eat. Yet 25% of the American populations suffers from food borne illness and Malaysians not only eat too much but also eat the wrong type of food . People do have to take more serious on this matter by taking healthy foods. People can improve their health condition, increase their awareness on quality and nutritional control of food and benefits people on physical and mental are several of advantages people can enjoy when they are concerned of the food they consume daily in their life.

One of the most crucial benefits when people concerned of the food they consume is they can improve their health condition. People can improve as well as maintain their body health such as people can lower blood pressure in their body, they also can reduced the risk of getting cancer and heart disease and by take the right nutrition, people can improves their digestion system. Firstly, by concerned about the food people eat they can lower blood pressure. Based on one article in Reader Digest(2012, p.65), according to Martha Gulati, cardiologist of Ohio State University and also heart specialist says that people should improve their sodium-potassium ratio either by increasing their potassium or decreasing sodium in body. It is because potassium can lower the blood pressure raising effects of sodium. Another study also reveals that by raising daily potassium intake by 1600mg, equivalent of say, a cup of milk, two bananas, a quarter of an avocado and a half cup raisins, can lower people risk towards stroke, one of disease cause by blood pressure by 21%. Another several types of food that are good sources of potassium include cocoa, dried apricots, fish, prunes, spinach, plain yogurt, and potatoes with skin (Reader Digest,2012,p.65). Secondly, people can reduced the risk of getting cancer and heart disease. They can start by consuming food that lower fat, lower sodium fewer calories and more fiber such as eating more fruit and vegetables which are full of antioxidants. These type of foods can help prevent cancer disease. Based on article Medicine Net (1999) result on research studies shows women that eat low in meat with lots of fruit can decrease their risk for breast cancer and colon cancer. In addition, people should consume food that heavy on the phytonutrients which is have disease- fighting and health promoting power. Sheri(2006,p.133) states that based on book, The Color Code : A Revolutionary Eating Plan For Optimal Health, discussed the health benefits of phytonutrients and recommends people should choose foods from a minimum of four color daily. It is red, orange-yellow, green, and blue-purple. Phytonutrients available in each color group vary with the pigment. For example, red food like tomatoes contains lycopene, which is may prevent prostate cancer in men, the carotenoids in yellows-orange foods may reduce risk of heart disease, the green foods such as broccoli contain sulforaphane which is a cancer fighter and blueberries contain antioxidants, have disease fighting power and also example of blue-purple food.
