There is no doubt that there has been controversay over whether or not English should be the official language of the United States. I personally feel English should not be the official language, mostle because I feel America does not need an official language.
America has always been proud of being a diverse country. People from all over the world have made their way to America be begin a life in a free country. If America is willing to take in other heritages, then why should we as a country force anyone to speak English? If this were to happen, I feel America would be losing a part of its culture. We have always been referred to as the "melting pot," taking in everyone and making them part of a whole. Making English the official language would ruin this theory.
One may argue that English is the dominant language of America so therefore it should be the official language. I have to disagree with this. I understand that living in America does require someone to know at least a small amount of English in order to get by on a daily basis, but that is the case for any country you live it because there will always be one language that is more dominant than the others. I like to try to envision myself in someone's shoes who does not speak English. If you have even studied a foreign language in school, you know how difficult it is to learn a new language. I myself have studied other languages and it was very difficult, and i can't even imagine how hard English must be to learn, espcially with all our grammatical rules.
When it comes down to language, America does not need one language to be the official one. It really serves no purpose because America will still be a diverse country with people who speak different languages. Not to mention, who wants to have an official language that originated in a place that Americans fought against for our freedom?
