Short Story Summary of The Somebody
The writer of this article is Danny Santiago also known as Daniel Lewis James, born in Kansas city, 1911, and passed away in 1988.First novel- Famous All Over Town 1984 received the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award for fiction given by the American Academy and Institute of Artsand Letters in 1984 and the PEN President's Award in 1985 for the novel. The character he creates in The Somebody is based on the experience he witnessed.

This story portraits the hero Chato by using some comments of the character himself to give readers an impression. The setting is Eastside of Los Angeles, Shamrock Street where Chato and his family live. It is a Mexican-American family with many children but they’re not closed to each other. Besides, his parents also do not give him enough love which makes him feel bad. The S.P. Railroad bought up the whole street, every house except his father’s. So Chato is left in this area without his gang, he feels alone and no recognition.

Chato hangs around the streets and writes his name beautifully everywhere to show his existence like a ghost. He appreciates Mr. Cully who helps him out when some guys are after him. He signs his name on Triple A Market, firehouse, funeral home imaging they belong to him. However, he is actually a coward when he sees Sierra guys who want to catch him. To avoid seeing them, he slid into the Boys’ Club where is safe for him, but he finds the life in it is too boring for him, so he starts to write his name again. His teacher Mr. Calderon advises him not to write those marks to cut off completely from the gang he belonged to before, and start his new life. Chato refuses to take his advice for the excuse that this mark is his name, and he hates this teacher now. Then he meets Crusader who likes his signature and wants to cooperate with his for fun. Chato is tempted at first, but he is afraid that the connection between them will hurt his reptation, so he rejects
