The Land Lady
1. Who are the protagonist and antagonist?
In this short story the protagonist is Billy Weaver, a young 17 year old brisk man dressed appropriately in a suit. The antagonist is the land lady who lures Billy inside her building. 2. What is the mode of narration: first person, or third person point of view? How do you know this? The mode of narration is a third person point of view. The narrator refers to all the characters by name. Also the narrator has access to a character’s thoughts for example, “the old girl is slightly dotty”. Billy told himself. 3. What is the setting? Billy Weaver a sharp looking seventeen year old is looking for a place to stay while in Bath, England. Billy ends up finding a printed notice which leads him to the bed and breakfast. As he rang the bell the first inciting incident was when the land lady popped out before Billy’s eyes. As the night went on, so did the land lady’s behavior. Billy’s suspicion grew as he realized only two people have stayed in the bed and breakfast over a coarse of several years. Not knowingly, as Billy sat and drank the cup of tea with her he was next. 5. What is the central theme of the story? State it in a theme statement that is a complete sentence. Don’t accept things from strangers, because looks may be deceiving. 6. What is the main conflict type and who is it between?
