Short Story Competition-The Serpentine
This part of the city buzzed with life 24 hours a day but now it felt like the loneliest place in the world. There I was standing on the balcony staring out into the pitch black skyline of what used to be the suburbs of Manhattan. It was completely deserted. Nobody knew what had happened to the thousands of inhabitants that had seemingly vanished into thin air. There were some rumors stating that they were abducted by aliens. I would think otherwise because aliens to my comprehension are just a bunch of made-up beings that are considered to be real by a couple of morons. I, however, believe that there may be deep secret within our own human civilization that may be a cause for this ‘great disappearing’ act.
I was sitting at my work desk on my iMac researching about human civilizations when I came across something called the Doomsday Prophecy. It was calculated and prophesized by the Mayans. In the prophecy it is stated that on the 31st of December 2012 the world will end in a catastrophic way. The site didn’t mention in what way but I think that there is a connection between these disappearances and this apocalypse. I kept on reading the blog and received a phone call. It was an unknown number. I picked it up. I heard a crackling and then dead silence and in a monochromic voice the message ‘don’t look for us’ was announced and the call ended. I was used to unknown calls but I felt that this call was intentional and the people on the other line were the people that had something to do with the disappearances.
The next day I contacted Cyber cell in order to get someone to help me find out who owned the unknown number. I was lucky because I was connected through to an intimate friend of mine when I was in Uni. I handed over my phone and told him that I’d come back the other day. In the meantime I went off to the local library to do a bit of research on the Doomsday Prophecy. I had found nothing. I was disheartened.
