Dota Games: A mystifying Addiction
Thesis Statement

I. Introduction
Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a custom scenario for Warcraft III, based on the “Aeon of Strife” map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is to destroy the opponents “Ancient”. The two teams’ ancients are heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called “creeps”. As in role-playing games, players level up their hero and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

The scenario was developed with the “World Editor” of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and was updated upon the release of the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. There have been many variations of the original concept; currently, the most popular is Dota Allstars, which has been maintained by several authors during development.

Since its release, Allstars has become a feature at several worldwide tournaments, including Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon and Asian World Cyber Games, as well as the Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution Leagues; Gamasutra was declared that DotA was perhaps the most popular “free, non-supported game mod in the world”. The map has gone on to influence other maps and games, including LOL(league of Legends), HON(Heroes of New Earth), and Demigod.

Computer Games have now been with us for over 30 years. The Atari 2600 is nearly 25 years old. Civilization is now nearly 10 years old. Yet, many people fail to recognized this complex achievements as more than fads or child’s play. Ask most people what they think about video games many will respond that they’re a waste of

It also shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the people who actually do play and make video and computer games have a very hard time getting their positive message heard. This is especially true for game-playing kids . . . who, given half a chance, would happily explain why video and computer games are a positive part of their life, and why they spend so much time playing them.…

Kurt Squire, a writer for “Game Studios”, in his article “Cultural Framing of Computer/Video Games”(2002) explores the role of video game in society that proposes that video games are the next generation of media with a variety of uses. He focuses on the history of games-media and compares the platform to other media such as film and television, in order to counter arguments critical of games, then he explores the beneficial implementation of games for learning purposes by providing evidence supporting games as learning tools. Squire develops this evidence in order to persuade the audience to favor video and computer games as a “next-generation” social tool. Squire seems to intend his audience to be either business or media leaders by presenting…

Two teams of five players must try to destroy each other’s base. That’s it. Sounds simple right? But when XP, gold, CS, wards, lanes, ganks, Barons, dragons, and countless other variables that no doubt make little or no sense to the uninitiated are thrown into the mix, the game morphs from kindergarten math into math so complicated and complex, that even the world’s best mathematicians would struggle. I was drawn in by the simplistic masquerade, and then found myself enthralled by the intricacies and competitiveness of the game. Every facet I discovered in the game was so interesting and unique that I couldn’t look at games in the same light ever again. If I wasn’t playing League of Legends, I was wishing that I was. There wasn’t a day where I didn’t think of it, I found something I truly loved doing. I was content. And to this very day, I still…

I grew up in a household where video games were a privilege that I had to earn. When I had done all my homework and chores, I was allowed to play video games for an hour a day. As I grew older my parents thought I could make my own choices and did not limit the amount of time I spent playing video games. Many people today think that video games cause children to become couch potatoes, act dumb, and be rude. As a young child, my parents taught me that responsibilities come before the reward. That is why I have a different opinion of video games. I believe that video games can be beneficial to individuals; however, there are limitations. They help children deal with cancer, improve literacy skills, gain educational skills, and stay fit, but individuals should be cautious about the genre of the game and the amount of play time. When these precautions are taken, video games can be a helpful tool for many.…

Video games and computer games (from here on both categories will be simply referred to as video games for simplicity) have entered the domain of pop culture fairly recently. Although the first video game was developed in 1958 by William Higginbotham, their popularity didn’t occur until the seventies with the appearance of Pac-man and Frogger in the arcades (Computer and Video Games). If the younger generation of video game consumers would take a look at what was out there when the video game boom begun they wouldn’t be able to understand what was so attractive (and addictive?) about Pac-man and Frogger? The truth is, video games from over three decades ago share the same basic principles with the games we have out there right now. Let’s face it, we like video games because they provide us with interactive entertainment. In other words, we’re genuinely entertained by colorful objects that move on the TV/computer screen when we press certain buttons. I suggest that it is the overwhelming gratification that we experience from actually having absolute and unconditional control over something in our lives. Another suggestion that I have is that video games share the same elements or even directly imitate traditional games such as tag, ping-pong, chess, hopscotch etc.; video games allow us to engage in these games easily, without any stigma or significant effort on our parts. Video games are fun, inexpensive, can become a social activity allowing friends to play along, and sometimes they’re even mentally stimulating if not challenging. They’ve been a real hit every since they came out and today the video game industry has grown significantly. However, let’s examine the circle of people that are involved in production and design of video games.…
