CDA-Competency Statement #1: February 9,2013

To Establish and Maintain a Safe, Healthy Learning Environment

Functional Area #1: Safe
My goal in the functional area of safe is to provide a safe indoor and outdoor environment. Young infants are placed on their backs when they are sleeping. The crib is free of blankets, toys, or other soft materials that could cause suffocation. Mobile infants are kept safe by making sure that there isn't anything that is small enough they could put in their mouths and swallow. Toys are checked daily for broken or loose parts. Toddlers are kept safe by showing them the proper use of toys. They are encouraged to follow safety rules such as walking instead of running and sitting on a chair instead of climbing on it. As a child care provider I always have to check toys and playground equipment for any damages that may injury the children in my care, not only do I have to check toys and equipment I must check under toys outside for any creatures that may harm any of the children in my care. I am always giving gentle reminders of the rules that will keep them safe.

Functional Area #2: Healthy
My goal in the functional area of healthy is to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Young infants are kept healthy by washing hands of both the caregiver and the child before and after every diaper change as well as sanitizing the changing table. Disposable gloves are used for the diapering process. Mobile infants are kept healthy by cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily. Mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area for later cleaning. To keep toddlers healthy, nutritious meals are planned . Good eating habits are modeled and the child is encouraged to eat new foods. Parents of children in our care are to provide a clean blanket and mat cover each week. We teach the children that their blankets and pillows are for nap time only and we do not pull them out till it is nap time. Each child has their own cubby for personal items and everything is labeled.

Functional Area #3: Learning Environment
My goal in the functional area of learning environment is to provide a stimulating learning environment that promotes independence. Young infants are given the opportunity for tummy time to develop the strength to hold their heads up. Mobile infants are given the opportunity to explore their environment by creeping and crawling but do so under supervision. Toddlers' learning environment includes creating a day to day routine for them as regular meal times, play times and rest times. This allows them to know what to expect.

At our setting for example, if it was to be decided that our outdoor activity for the day was to be driving the push along cars and the push bikes. First of all someone would go and check that there are no obstacles such as debris and other play equipment in the area to be used in order to prevent any risk of accidents, also to check that the cars and bikes are in good working order and are safe for the children to use. These risk assessments are carried out on a daily basis for the safety of the children in our care. Our outside play area is enclosed with a wooden wall fence with a single 2meter gate to access it, which is always kept closed whether the children are in the play area or not. With this safely enclosed outside area the children are free to explore and play. Once we are ready to go out, the register is put into our first aid bag and taken outdoors with us. We take our register with us in case there was a fire then we can be sure of the attendance of children in our care on that particular day. The first aid bag is handy for any accidents that can be dealt with on site. When the children are outside, the ones that need assistance are helped into the cars or on bikes, or shown how to operate the equipment taking into account that every child is an individual with their own needs. Some children could be at the potty training stage or be using the toilet, so it is important that the toilets are checked for cleanliness and…

My goal in this functional area is to keep children safe at all times by supervising them constantly and establishing class rules that will help children stay safe. The class rules related to this functional area will be walk in the classroom, keep your hands to yourself, and stay in the classroom at all times. I will teach children why these class rules are so important as well. In addition to these rules I will teach my students basic safety measures like stranger danger, only cross the road with an adult, and only leave the classroom with an adult. I will also inspect my student’s outdoor and indoor environments before the children come in, in the morning and throughout the day as the children participate in activities. It is important to inspect these places because children can be injured by broken toys and playground equipment. It is also important to teach children these basic safety measures because children don’t always understand how dangerous some of the things they do are.…

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

Safety is one of the most important aspects of the task given to an educator. My main concern is that the trust and respect is fulfilled daily while making sure a child is not injured in the given environment. Daily tasks must include a thorough cleanup of the classroom, making sure all loose furniture, accessories and electrical appliances are covered when not in use. All chemicals, utensils, and school supplies should be in collaboration with indoor rules including loose or locked gates, loose playground equipment and making sure clothing is secure during playtime. The child’s safety allows consistent development within the classroom.…

Another way in which I promote safety is by checking the environments (Inside, Outside, and other sites on and off the installation) before the youth arrive to make sure that precautions are in place. By doing this I am better able to control my surroundings if something goes wrong. Precautions such as safety plugs, cabinets and closets are locked, and that there are no broken toys or dangerous objects in the youth space. To be sure I have checked the room completely a daily safety checklist is used for each classroom. Items that are unsafe are removed from the class room, or repaired.…
