In the film “Shawshank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont it shows that good and evil personalities are shown as opposite to the stereotypes society holds. One expects characters like the warden and the guards to be good people and the prisons to be the bad people yet they are proved different after watching the film. The use of different cinematic techniques such as lighting, camera angles, music and different shots are used in the film to display the powerful difference between good and evil. Shawshank prison presents to us in its opening shots of Andy Dufresne as he arrives to begin his Double life sentences in a gray, lifeless area nothing but concrete blocks and bars this sets an evil tone for the prisoners with nothing but darkness and in confinement. Compared to the Warden who is seen as the god in the film, as his room is always well lit and the camera angle is always placed so that he looks down at the prisoners as he showing his power over them. As seen in the scene with the fat prisoner when the guards look down at him and beating him up. The scene where Tommy William’s was shot by one of the guards from above. The camera angle of this scene is on a high angle showing the dead body of Tommy in the light and darkness surrounding him contrasting between good and evil as Tommy was only hope for Andy who knew of his innocence. Even though tommy swore upon the bible that he spoke the truth. Despite the mistakes the prisoners made and the conditions they had to live within the prison being treated inhumanely by the guards, they were the only actually decent good people compared to the Warden and his guards who are evil. Such as the rooftop scene when Andy risk’s his life proving the guard wrong and earning...
