Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) is the biggest and oldest free trade zone approved by the State Council in June 1990 and covers an area of 10 square kilometers. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) incorporates various functions such as free trade, export processing, and logistic warehousing. Owing to its outstanding business environment and preferential policies which has been well recognized as golden bring of international trade and hottest investment zone for foreign companies in China. Nowadays, it has attracted over 9300 companies, involving over 80% trading companies. The amount of foreign enterprises set up in Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) Fortune 500 companies. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) has established relationship with 127 countries and regions around the world. Therefore, in terms of GDP, WFTZ accounts for over 60$ of the total of 15 FTZ in China.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) lies in the northeast of Shanghai and at the intercourse of Yangtze River and the eastern coast of China. Also, the elevated south-north inner ring in downtown area, Yan'an Dong Channel tunnel and Yan'an elevated inner ring enable the traffic from the city center to the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) to be more convenient. The Outer Ring goes through the east side of WFTZ and runs across Huangpu River at Zhang Huabang area, and reaches Wu Song Harbor area. It joins up with the country's traffic network especially the highways.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone (WFTZ) also has the Linqiao water plant which with a daily capacity of 400,000 MT is operational. It has paved 1000 mm water pipes, 300, 500, 800mm water pipes. The average pressure can reach 147 kilo, and the quality of the water accords with the state's drinking water standard.
