Compare/Contrast Essay-"The Birds"

The movie and the story, "The Birds" have many similarities and differences. From characters, to settings, to minor differences in the plot. The story "The Birds" is about a fishing village in Cornwall, England being attacked by masses of birds. The main character, Nat, is ahead of everyone else when he notices the birds' strange behavior. In the movie, the main character is Melanie Daniels, she travels from San Francisco to Bodega Bay to deliver some lovebirds to Cathy, Mitch Brenners eleven year old sister. In the movie, they are attacked by birds in the same way, but way more gory.

There are some similarities between the book and the movie. For example, the birds attack in the same ways. They come through the house, peck at windows, and try to break down the doors, which they do succeed in doing. Another similarity is using the blanket as a weapon. In the movie, Mitch uses it to block the birds from pecking at him, and in the book, Nat uses it to stop type birds from attacking him and his children. Also, in the movie and book, when the children are running away from the school, a little girl gets severely scratched across her face, and almost all of the children—except Cathy/Jill—die from the attack. One more similarity is the endings of both the story and movie. The story ends with almost everyone—not including Nat's family—dead, due to the bird attacks, never getting the newscast on what's happening. In the movie, Melanie—who was brutally attacked by the birds—, Mitch, Cathy, and Lydia driving away from Bodega Bay—the only place attacked by birds—after everyone else is already dead. Both portrayals of "The Birds" end with you wondering what happens next.

There are many differences in the movie and the story. For example, the main characters. In the movie the main character is Melanie Daniels. But in the story, the main character is Nat. The settings are also different. In the

Although the book shows the individual people, the movie shows the relationships in action more than the book. The movie shows Cal and the children in action. It shows how they act around each other, the looks and the tones of voices that are being used, that can change the whole meaning of different phrases. Like when the children find the rabid dog, and the looks that are passed between the children and Cal are not in the book, only the words and actions. The relationship between the Finch children and Dill is shown in many different ways. The way that they talk to one another. Like how they stress the words in a sentence, or act around each other.…

First something that was the same is Freak dying at the end, but it wasn’t exactly the same because Freak dies at home in the movie and in the book he dies in a hospital. Another similarity would be the down under because in the book it was always dark and quiet and in the movie they kept it the same. Also something the two things kept the same was how Max and Freak met by getting the mechanical bird out of the tree.…

    The Ghost Bird

In “Animal Distress Calls” the main character won’t give up on sick Josie(an ostrich) but he knows he can’t help her because he's just a kid and not a vet. For example in the text it says, “I know I can’t give Josie the same kind of help you can (Schrefer 29).” We can conclude that from that example the main character is really trying to help the bird as best as she can because she wants her to feel better and restore to full health. Similarly, in “The Ghost Bird” the characters attempt to save birds too, but this time only one. For example, Mrs.Gill tries to look for the birds through all of the birdhouses to find where the supposedly extinct birds may be nesting.“We’ve checked each bird house at least twice.” Mrs.Gill said(Smith 29)”, this textual evidence shows that everyone is trying hard no matter how many bird houses there are, they want to find the birds very badly to save their dwindling numbers and to prove that Mr.Tanner had seen those birds and he wasn’t crazy as the town had thought. Also there a humongous amount of bird houses at Mr.Tanner’s home so that's a tremendous amount of bird houses to look through. Therefore this evidence explains, “The Ghost Bird” and “Animal Distress Calls” both have the same…

In the film of “The Birds the main characters consisted of Melanie Davis, Mitch Brenner, Annie Hayworth, Cathy Brenner, and Lydia Brenner. The film took place in the 1960s in two parts of California. The way the birds first attacked in the film was similar to the way they first attacked in the short story, in the film a sea gull swooped down and scratched Melanie Davis’ head. The main characters were very concerned with the birds behavior after the first attack and they took all of the signs and warnings seriously. They protected their homes by hanging wooden planks on their doors and windows. In the film police officers did not do anything to stop the attacks, they thought everything was normal. At the end of the film, the main characters manage to escape their home and head back to San Francisco while the…

A major difference between the short story and the film is the setting. In "The Birds", birds are attacking people all over the world. However, in The Birds the setting is only in one city. Having the birds in only one city attacking the people creates suspense because it makes the audience wonder why the birds are only in that one city and nowhere else. Also, in the short story,…

The similarities in the movie and the story were they had the setting and everything the same. It also had the same characteristics. The man and the dog looked looked just like they were described in the story. And it looked like the man didn't have an imagination like it said in the story. Both were descriptive and fun to do. When you watch the movie and read the story you can sort of sense how cold it is. The dog in both acted just like he was explained, cold, harmless, and boring. Also in common they had tried to make a fire.…
