Larry Simmons Residence (LSR) of A New Leaf is a residential treatment center for adolescent male sex offenders. They treat male sex offenders have between the ages of twelve to seventeen. LSR only has room for twenty boys in their treatment center. A New Leaf is a not for profit agency which was previously known as PREHAB of Arizona, Inc. It is funded by United Way to private donations and also includes many government agencies, such as the Arizona Departments of Juvenile Corrections, Economic Security, Public Safety, Commerce, Education, and the Court system. The purpose of the residential treatment center is to take sex offenders out of their home environment and encourages change and healing through individual, family and group therapy sessions. These offenders are given the chance to change while given the freedom to make their own decisions and accept the consequences to their actions. This allows the boy an opportunity to rejoin society as a productive member instead of serving time in jail or prison. The major theoretical framework used to help treat male sex offenders is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. There are some other used like Learning theory and Social Exchange theory.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapy based on modifying cognitions, assumptions, beliefs and behaviors, with the aim of influencing disturbed emotions(Health, n.d, p. 1). The general approach, developed out of behavior modification, Cognitive Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Some techniques used may be keeping a diary of significant events and associated feelings, thoughts and behaviors and beliefs that might be unhelpful and unrealistic. Relaxation and distraction techniques are also used in CBT to help try to modify the way sex offenders think and modify their behavior.
