It is difficult to have a command on cyclic movement of fashion, needs, requirements and the lifestyles. The process of change is influenced by the law of nature which forces us to welcome a change. If we delay the seeds of dissatisfaction and monotony, get a conducive nexus for there germination and development. Hence to control or regulate the process, we allow a change which influences our decision making behavior and forces us to welcome change of place. In Indian perspective, seventh five year plan was water shed in the development of tourism industry. For the first time, the vast potential of tourism as a foreign exchange earner and generator of employment opportunity was recognized. In the development of tourism the public sector has made a significant contribution. The future growth of tourism is required to activated with the support of private sector. In the eighth five year plan, the special tourism area have been selected and in the ninth five year plan we look forward to energise the process of development but the image problem is found complicating the task of professionals. We have tremendous opportunity and the professional excellence would make ways for capitalizing on the same optimally.
Tourism is a pleasure activity in which money earned in one’s normal domicile is spent in the places visited. The following points emerge regarding tourism by different experts: (1) Tourism is a temporary and short term movement of people. (2) Tourism is the totality of relationship.
(3) It is activity involving the complex mixture of material and psychological elements. (4) Tourism is the activity concerned with the utilization of leisure hours. (5) Tourism is the composite industry consisting of various segments.
The origin of the word “tourist “dates back to 1292 AD. It has come from word ‘tour’. Tourist are the voluntary temporary travelers, travelling in the expectation of pleasure from the novelty and change experienced on a relatively and non-recurrent round trip. Tourists are:
(1) Persons travelling for pleasure, health and domestic reason. (2) Person arriving in the course of sea cruise.
(3) Person travelling for business purpose.
(4) Person travelling for convention.
Not to be tourist:
(1) Person arriving without a work to take up an occupation. (2) Person coming from rural area to urban area.
(3) Students in boarding.
(4) Person passing through a country without stopping.
Tourism marketing-the concept:
Marketing in tourism is to be understood as the systematic and coordinated execution of business policy by tourist undertaking whether private or state, owned at local, regional, national or at international level to achieve the optional satisfaction of the needs of identifiable consumer groups and in doing so achieves an appropriate return. Tourism marketing activities are systematic and coordinated efforts extended by national tourist organization and tourist enterprises at international, national and local level to optimize the satisfaction of tourist group and individual in view of sustained tourism growth.
