Self Reflective Essay

After reading the case study I’m still me I have really thought in a different manner to a couple different issues. I never really opened my eyes to people with disabilities and the problems they face on a daily basis until after reading this story of these two brave men. It has made me think about the problems that they face growing up after being born with these disabilities and also the struggles that people have to face when they don’t get disabled until the long years ahead. While reading this story I thought a lot about the family issues they face, the working field for people with these daily challenges, and also just the fact of them being accepted in the world as a normal human being. These things really touched my heart not realizing the things they go through that so many people take advantage of on a daily basis.

I found it very interesting the two different lifestyles that the two men lived with during their lives after. I think it is a good thing and a bad thing in a different manner to how his mom treated him. I believe that you can show someone with a disability to much sympathy. A lot of people don’t want you to feel sorry for them and want to be accepted and looked at as if they were just as capable as we are. So many people try to treat them as if they are babies and not able to do anything which in return will make them not want to be around you. I feel like we should let them do as much as they are possibly able to do so they will feel accepted and feel as if there is nothing different about them. Also, letting them do things and be self dependent will not cause them to be lazy and depend on others for things that they are capable of doing. I feel like that reason is one reason you see many people with disabilities over weight because the family waits on them hand and foot.
