As read through the Kevin Huggins book for second time so many chapters
popped out, like a “children’s pop up” book, different concepts surfaced off the pages
forcing you to engage them in a real-time conversation. The one that seemed to show
itself or the one that I seem to relate to easily is Chapter 6 “Life – words for guiding
reflection”. I was on my way to write this posting when I got caught up in thinking about
what I would say. How would I frame my questions to tickle a mentee’s mind? Was I
capable of displaying enough insight and wisdom to engage and guide someone through
self reflection? What would my wife think, when she reads it? And so on and so forth,
my mind chattered away at me, I then I realized why this chapter grabbed at me, it
something I have been living daily.
Let’s take a walk down my “memory lane”, much of our attitudes about intimate
relationships, actually relationship in general, what to expect from them and how to
maneuver within them, are shaped by observing our parents' and other adults' relationships.
My observations taught me that relationships are short term at best, that one side of the
equation would eventually extract themselves and subtract themselves, never to be part of
the equation again. So for example, I have zero contact with my father’s side of the
family, yes I remember about uncles and cousins from my childhood but in my memories we
are still 5 and 6 years old. Also in writing this paper I just realized I know nothing about
my grandfather’s side of the family, or for that matter my grandfather, that branch on the
family tree stops at grandpa’s name. And the beat goes on; all my aunts and uncles were all
separated. The second observation taught me to self reliant and self sufficient, as you can
see from above, I was raised strong women who stood on their own two feet, not... [continues]
