I come from a Mexican background. Being raised in   the American culture, coming from a Mexican family, was very hard for my parents to do. I was born in Mexico. I came to the U.S when I was six years old, thus I consider myself to be Mexican-American. My primary language is Spanish. It was very difficult to communicate with my classmates because I was the only one in the class that did not   speak English, I believe that was a big barrier to me because that made me shy and was not able to express myself.   The language spoken at home is only Spanish. I have lived in the San Fernando Valley almost my entire life. Most of the people where I   live, come from a Mexican-American and African-American background. I have associating with the Hispanic community all my life. I feel very comfortable associating with other ethnic background. I currently work with a majority of Armenian people and that has helped me understand other cultures besides my own.   I consider myself to be middle class citizen, thus I have always helped people that are in need with what I can.   I come from a Catholic family that strongly believe that Values, Norms, and Religion should be a priority. I was raised to believe and obey those rules. The Mexican   culture is a male dominated culture that leaves women little freedom. Being the only Female in the family, my parents were very strict with me and had high expectations . I feel that because I am a “girl” in the “Mexican-community“, the standards are higher on me. I was raised to believe that a woman should not have sex prior to marriage, a woman should act in a conservative way, A woman should get married and have children, a woman should respect and obey her husband, and   should only get married within the race. As   I got older, I become aware of different cultural backgrounds. I grew up in a “modern” Hispanic community.
