Segway Case Analysis
From the product information leak to the day Ginger was officially introduced to the world on Good Morning America in 2001, the Segway was being hailed as revolutionary product from a renowned inventor. While only a handful of individuals actually knew the specifics of the product, it was communicated as the future of transportation and possibly the most innovative invention since the internet or automobile. However, after its world debut, many believe it has not lived up to the hype. With government intervention, uncertain demand from the consumer market, and a high selling price, the Segway faces a tough battle to officially be deemed a success. The Segway itself has both positive and negative attributes relating to its product development. On the positive side, the Segway is revolutionary in that it serves as an extension to the human. “No engine, no throttle, no gearshift and no steering wheel. And it can carry the average rider for a full day, nonstop, on only five cents’ worth of electricity.” Unlike all other forms of transportation, the Segway does not demand all the navigational tools to become mobile. Developed with the use of various microprocessors, the machine conforms to body movements in the acts of propelling oneself in any direction while maintaining balance. Additionally, the Segway can be used on various terrains, which increases the likelihood for a strong demand in both the government (e.g. military) and commercial demand. As the article put it best, the Segway is “cheap, clean, efficient, [and] maneuverable.” Despite all the benefits of the Segway and the careful thought process that went into its production, it still faces a large concern; will this machine be viewed as a toy? This is the primary concern of Kamen and rightfully so. Kamen knows that many consumers will view it as an expensive toy as opposed to a revolutionary form of transportation.     Segway LLC is a company created by Dean Kamen in 2002 to manufacture and market the Segway Human Transporter. The SHT is a personal transport vehicle held upright by gyroscope technology. It is for use on and off-road, for recreation and commuting, by police departments and for government/military uses. Some of the SHT’s weaknesses include the $100 million development price tag and its high selling cost of over $4,500. A third weakness for the SHT is that Segway has not created enough physical locations where consumers can test drive and buy a machine. A final weakness is the lack of corporate/front office competence shown by Dean Kamen. The strengths of the SHT include its versatility of application. Segway has been shown to be valuable to police in patrolling duties and military with bomb disposal vehicles. The SHT also has shows strength in its financial backing. Mr. Kamen has been able to call on investors at any time to help financially when Segway has fallen short of its sales forecasts for the SHT. Segway has many opportunities on the horizon. If it makes some changes to its business/marketing strategy, it could still potentially realize great profits. It also has the opportunity to lower its prices to try and gain sales since it is already offered at a high price (incentive capability). The SHT has an opportunity as well to actualize the perception that it is a viable solution to the world’s congestion, energy and pollution problems. Finally, Segway has the opportunity to make changes to succeed in a market with no serious direct competitors besides some concepts that have been shown, like the concept Toyota presented at its latest tradeshow. Some threats to Segway are that the SHT is seen as a hazard to pedestrians on sidewalks and that it is too hard to operate.     Kamen is never able to shake his high expectations for the Segway long enough to see all the short-term and big revenue opportunities his product. The Segway isn’t a product that would have been able to revolutionize the way people get around overnight. It would take years for people and cities to adopt this new technology. Kamen should have only designed and marketed the product with a strong focus on commercial use from the very beginning.
