The song “Mad World”, by Gary Jules has the same theme as the book “Divergent”. They both have the theme “Search for Identity”. In the song, Gary Jules sings, “Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow, No tomorrow”. Tris constantly wants to cry and leave, but she knows that she will become factionless if she does. Crying shows weakness and the other initiates will pick on her and try to make her leave if she shows weakness, and there would be no tomorrow. The song “Mad World” tells the story of people doing what they are told and trying to find out what their purpose in life/their duties are. In the book “Divergent”, Tris is also trying to find out what her purpose is and if she chose the correct faction. “Mad World” by Gary Jules Lyrics:

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere
Going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression
No expression
Hide my head I want to drown my
Sorrow
No tomorrow
No tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in
Circles it’s a very, very
Mad World
Mad World
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in
Circles it’s a very, very
Mad World
Mad World
Enlarging your world
Mad World
