Disadvantages of Paying a Low Wage
With the society developing, life is changing for many people. The price of commodities, education fees, daily expenses; these costs have increased dramatically. Therefore, the life for people who are in poverty is becoming harder and harder. Because these people lack education, they just can do some basic jobs; however, these jobs usually are low-wage jobs. Companies pay low salary to workers and let them to do toilsome work. Nowadays, it is wrong to pay workers a low wage, because a low-wage job has no ability to support people to live in society, it diminishes productivity of some corporations, and it makes people who are in poverty loss faith in the government’s policy. A low-wage job has no ability to support people to live in society. According to Ehrenreich (2012), there is one of five people who have a job, but have no place to live. In most case they live in the cheap motel, trailers, even vans. (p.25-p.26) Waitressing is a low-wage job; as a case in point, the job that Ehrenreich first gets is working in Hearthside restaurant. She has to work from 2pm to 10 pm, and every hour she just can gain 2.45 U.S dollars plus tips. She can make 800 dollars a month. Nevertheless, as she mentioned in Nickel and Dimed, “ [She needs] $1,000 for the first month’s rent and deposit, $100 for initial groceries and cash in [her] pocket, $200 stuffed away for emergencies.” (p.27) Therefore, the total money for her first month is $1,300, which is much more than $800, so she cannot survive depending on her salary. To deal with this situation, she tries to find a second job that can increase her income. The second job is also waitressing; however, these two jobs that she takes at the same time are taken up. 14 hours for one day, and it is hard to work 14 hours in one day (p.32). This is the contradiction of low-wage jobs; if people want to survive they need take more than one basic job, but people do not have enough ability to bear the stress that is caused by two low-wage jobs. As she said to Gail “I’m going to quit,” she cannot endure this stress for two works (p.32). Hence, this is one reason that low-wage jobs are unacceptable. Paying a low wage to people also can diminish the productivity of some corporations. Most people prefer a high salary; however, big companies offer hard work with a low wage. One can imagine that when workers work, the initiative to work is very low. There is an example that happened in Lenovo Company which is one of the biggest computer companies in the world. In 2014, Lenovo Company employed lots of hobos with an extremely low salary to work in their components production line. This action saved a lot of money in the first 6 months. Nevertheless, the components (battery) that they make have a hidden danger. Once the battery is overheating, these cells could...
