The Screwtape letters is a riveting story set in the 1940’s. It is about how the devil is everywhere at all times, day and night, watching and waiting, tempting you to sin. The devil feeds off of sin and sinful people. In the story, screwtape, the devil’s henchman, writes letters to his nephew wormwood. By speaking through the letters screwtape tries to teach wormwood to retrieve souls and become a higher achie demon. Screwtapes main goal is to teach wormwood how to trick the christians into sinning. Wormwood is assigned a christian man known as the patient. Wormwood tries to ruin this man’s relationship with God by getting into his prayers, his thoughts and emotions.

“The philosophy of hell is that one thing is not another thing. One self is not another self. My good is my good, and your good is yours. What one gains another one loses. Even an inanimate object is what it is by excluding all other objects from the space it occupies; if it expands, it does so by thrusting other objects aside of by absorbing them.”(334)

A self does the same. human and beast absorption takes place in the form of eating. For demons it takes the form of sucking the will and freedom out of the weaker self into a stronger being. God’s philosophy is the opposite. He has called everyone to love each other. “The good of oneself is to be the good of another”(334) Screwtape tells wormwood that “God has absorbed them but because their wills freely conform to His; He wants servants who can finally become sons. While satan wants cattle to can finally become his food. Demons suck life into themselves, God wants to give it out. demons are empty and would be filled; He is full and flows over.” (279) God wants peace and satan wants desolation.

The patient has a rocky relationship with his mother. Wormwood uses this to his advantage. Wormwood cannot stop or prevent him from praying but can torque his prayers to God and make them selfish and arrogant. Instead of the patient praying for...
