DOST3 approves projects worth P16 million in 1st half of 2014

A total of 19 projects worth P16,017,489.43 were approved by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. III (DOST-III) in the first half of the year. These projects are under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program or SETUP.

Among the beneficiaries are Amanda’s Marine Products in Balanga, Bataan for the construction of a cold storage facility. A leading producer of fish-based food condiments as well as dried fish products, this is the firm’s thirdSETUP engagement. Grace and Mercy ricemill in Baler, Aurora, on the other hand, will be able to acquire a multi-pass mill to upgrade its milling facilities. Asia Ceramics in Sto. Tomas, Pampanga, already an industry stalwart is aiming to further assure the quality of its products through the acquisition of a clay filter press and a bursting strength test machine.

SETUP which was introduced as a DOST flagship program in 2002 provides assistance to micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing them with the means to acquire appropriate technology interventions to upgrade their processes leading to improved quality and increased productivity. An enterprise may qualify for SETUP assistance if it belongs to any of the identified priority sectors such as agriculture and horticulture; food processing; furniture; gifts, toys and decors (GTD); information technology and communication/electronics; marine and aquatic resources; metals and engineering; and pharmaceutical/health products.

After more than a decade and 200 firm-beneficiaries later, SETUP has proven to be an effective avenue through which small entrepreneurs can gain access to modern production technologies that would otherwise be too difficult to properly identify and acquire without financing assistance. The SETUP scheme makes it easy for them to adopt innovations leading to enhanced operational efficiency that boost their competitiveness.

Food processing. Out of the 19 SETUP projects approved in the first half of the year, the food processing sector got a total of PhP5,294,560.00 for nine projects.
