Science and Religion: A Synopsis on American Opinion
Since the dawn of man, humans have attempted to explain the mysteries of the universe, and to justify their existence in it. Moreover, a constant philosophical grudge match between theologians and scientists has made finding a concrete answer to this quandary even more desirable. Although this heavily debated topic has produced numerous theories and explanations as to how life originated, an appropriate question still lingers today—can science and religion coexist? After all, it was Albert Einstein who said, “science without religion is lame and religion without science is blind” (Masci, David). While this possibility encompasses both perspectives in a vacant light, strong religious convictions often make it difficult for some to entertain the idea of an existing relationship between the two. See, most Christians place a significant emphasis on the contextual meanings found within the Bible—all of which suggest that an Intelligent Designer is responsible for the construction of the universe and all of its features, including the Earth and human life. On the contrary, advocates of the scientific approach believe that everything happened by chance, and that mankind derived from an inorganic matter through an evolutionary process. While both theories present a number of compelling arguments, the creation of mankind is too complex to settle on a predicated answer; thus, the mystery of the universe and human existence still thrives throughout the world. Throughout the course of this scholastic essay, the arguments for both religion and science will be introduced while uncovering the perspectives of the American conscious.
