“Schools should be responsible only for teaching academic skills and not for teaching ethical and social values.”

The speaker asserts that schools should be responsible only for teaching academic skills and not for teaching ethical and social values. The issue is much complex and controversial. People, because of their personal experience, emotional concerns, diverse education backgrounds and distinct positions, may hold the different opinions.

As far as I am concerned, I agree that schools should be responsible both for teaching academic skills and for teaching ethical and social values. My view can be strengthened by the following discussion.

To begin with, the first argument to be presented to support my position is that ethical and social values indeed play a critical role in the sound development of the students. The impact on the students they produce is, in my view, both palpable and profound. It is the right ethical and social values that help students establish a right way of living. It is the right ethical and social values that assist students to find their goal to move on. It is the right ethical and social values that encourage students to study harder to attribute to the development of our human being. School should be responsible for teaching ethical and social values so that students could grow healthily.

Secondly, there is another reason for me to choose this statement. If schools teach only academic skills but not ethical and social values, we can not imagine what kind of person the student would grow to. Those who could get knowledge of math, physics, chemistry, archeology, will not give a hand to a senior person falling on the street. Those who are able to work out a puzzle easily show no sympathy to the poverty and hungry people.

Admittedly, cultivation of ethical and social values is not only the responsibility of the school. It needs our government, school and family to work together. Even so, that is not to say, school...
