INTRODUCTION

1 .1       Introduction

The research aims to investigate the level of the effectiveness of using poems in enhancing students’ mastery in grammar and to enhance their performances in language proficiency.   Grammar teaching has often been regarded as a structure based, formal activity. After the integration of several sources and techniques, which are mainly based on communicative activities, the teaching of grammar gained a new insight. In the teaching of grammar, technique-resource combinations are often modified to structure-discourse match and if well developed, they can be used effectively for all phases of a grammar lesson. In order to make a grammar lesson effective, beneficial, and interesting a teacher should use some well-developed and fascinating techniques in the classroom. In the present paper, the examples of such integrated sources and techniques -the use of songs, verse, games, and problem solving activities- will be clarified and several examples will be provided.

This chapter presents the background of the problem, statement of problem, conceptual framework, aim of the research. The objectives of the research, research questions, research hypothesis, significance of the research, limitation of the research, and definition of terms.
1. 2       Background Of The Problem

The Malaysian School English Language Programme emphasizes the teaching of both the oracy and the literacy skills. The sound system, grammar, and vocabulary form the language contents required to teach those skills. The skills and language contents are presented in the curriculum specifications for each year of the lower and upper secondary school English language programmes.   In implementing the syllabus teachers should follow the principle of integration.
