As the first semester of freshmen year comes to a close, we as an English 100 class have written about many different topics throughout the course. We started with an introductory paper about ourselves, followed by a paper that we shared what life lessons we wanted to pass down to our children, next came a description essay where we went into as much detail as we possibly could on one or two photos we found, second to last was a persuasive paper, and our final paper was all about any country we chose. As we went from paper to paper my writing only improved as I learned new skills and better ways to write. The essay we first wrote was the introduction essay, it was simply to get to know different interesting things about each student and get a feel for how we all write. On this paper I did well writing all about fostering kittens back home with my family. My details were good, I had a clever title, and my word choices really helped not make the paper repetitive, all of this good content I had in my paper put me at a grade of 90% on this paper. I struggled with a few smalls things on the first paper of the semester, punctuation was a slight struggle, I needed to not use exclamation marks and know when to spell out numbers. My punctuation problem also overflowed into major problems I had on this paper, which were commas. Commas were something I had a big problem with the whole semester, the problem dwindled as we kept writing, but this problem was most prominent in this first introductory paper. Another large problem I had was using words like I and you throughout my paper. To revise this paper I took out the you and Is I had put in there. I also not only checked twice, but three times for comma mistakes. The following paper was the ethics paper, in which we wrote about lessons that our parents taught us or failed to teach us that we hope to one day teach our kids. This paper was really enjoyable for me to write because I think explaining why everyone

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I trudge up two flights of stairs with the wind whipping at my face as my fingers feverishly click out the final text message I need to send before class starts. I walk into the warm, musty computer lab and sit at my usual spot with the view of the library through the tree limbs. I am always sure to come to English class because I know of my terrible history in this subject area. I have always struggled with English and before this semester had assumed that the college level class would be the death of me. As I read over the syllabus for this class it states that we will learn to understand writing assignments as a series of tasks and develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading the assigned papers. I shuddered at the sheer thought of having to write five papers. Narrative, Evaluation, Profile, Position. These words might as well have been written in another language because I had no idea how to differentiate between them. Despite my fears, I believe this semester’s English 101 course has truly helped me develop my writing skills and advance to a more capable writer.…

I numbered my dislikes from 1 to 5. Having my ideas in order would make this paper that much easier to write about. Knowing which paragraphs would come first gave my mind a little bit of ease. I wrote a rough draft of my paper and had it edited it. Although I didn’t like want to write this essay, I gave my best to it. After my paper was marked all up I figured, ok I can start the typing now. Moving at a moderate pace, I came to the typing phase of my paper. Deciding what font to use was easy. The professor gave us very strict guidelines to follow as far as font, letter size, and format came. Paragraph one was the introduction, pretty easy. Paragraph 2 followed then 3, 4, 5 etc…. By the time I got the conclusion I was pretty excited. I have seemed to breeze through the whole essay just in time. Just 2 hours before class, I finally had a chance to relax and I began to believe that I accomplished my goal and proved myself once again. The ultimate opinion was my teacher’s of course. He always seemed to depict things that neither I nor my helpers noticed. So my next step was go to class and turn it…

Writing papers has always been something I would try to avoid. It is time consuming and challenging to write a paper worthy of a high grade. When English Composition 1 started, the time consumption and challenge escalated tremendously. My successes and failures became visible to me throughout this course. I found many high points, more low points, and overcame difficulties I did not think I would be able to overcome.…
