Today’s headlines are continually filled with reminders of how violent schools are becoming. School systems seem to be faced with ever-increasing waves of negative publicity about their viability in the twenty-first century. Administrators, parents, and students scramble to combat these problems, while trying to insure the availability of quality education. Offering a safe and productive environment is paramount in achieving this goal. In response, many districts have come to the conclusion that school uniforms are a creative way to reduce discipline problems and improve school productivity. School districts should adopt school uniform policies, which promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment.
Every year students, staff, and administrators are faced with violence and theft while on school premises; this is a main reason to have school uniforms as a part of safety, and dress code for students. School uniforms help to reduce violence, theft, and conflicts. Many schools faced with problems and challenges from trouble neighborhoods and crime. “But a study of seven hundred communities revealed that thirty percent of suburban and rural schools also reported an increase in violence over a five-year period” (Challenge of School Violence, 2010). “According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Manual Uniforms, many large public school systems—including Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dayton, Detroit, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Miami, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Phoenix, Seattle, and St. Louis—have schools with either voluntary or mandatory uniform policies, mostly in elementary and middle school” (Uniforms/Dress Codes, 2010).
