School Descriptors of Context
Overland High School is one of, if not the most diverse high schools in the state of Colorado. There are approximately 2,230 students enrolled currently, 505 of them being seniors. Demographically, 37.8% are Black, 33.9% White, 22% Hispanic, 6.2% Asian and 0.7% are American Indian. There are said to be over 50 different languages spoken amongst the students and staff. These factors make certain programs, like AVID, extremely critical and highly effective. There are several organizations and clubs that accommodate almost all of the student’s diverse needs. In 2007, 69% of the 310 students who took an AP exam received a 3 or better. The average ACT score in 2007 was 19.8, with the top 25% receiving an average score of 24.8. This is almost unheard of, considering the demographic make-up of the school. The range of classes available for students is unbelievable. A student can leave Overland more prepared for a college than a sophomore beginning his second year. There is also a course track that can take the lowest-performing students and get them up to par and beyond on every key subject. The school has a goal that they are truly committed to that aims to send every student enrolled to college.
The classes I teach in are a true reflection of what Overland is about. The demographics are pretty identical to the entire schools. There are kids in my classes who speak a total of 4 different languages. It is pretty even between boys and girls and the class sizes range from 20-30 students. I have freshmen in my Algebra 2 honors course and juniors and seniors in my Algebra 1 CP (college placement) to put the range of intelligences into perspective. There are two Middle Eastern kids on the freshman basketball team I coach that have to go and pray every Monday at the same time.
