The Scarlet Letter had many themes and symbols within the story. Sin in where characters throughout Scarlet Letter created. In the beginning of the story, Hester Prynne the main character confessed her sin.   Roger Chillingworth, a physician and Arthur Dimmesdale, a holy clergyman argues whether or not a person should be punished by their confession of their sin.  
Dimmesdale’s argument reflects that a person should not be punished based on their sin. In The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale used experiences to show credibility. Some people go to Dimmesdale to make confessions because they know that he’s rather forgiving than going forth being punished for one self’s sin. This shows that sometimes sinners will go through their own punishment rather than having another punishment on top of one they’ve already went through them for making the mistake. For instance, when he is reminded of his sin, he grabs his chests and feels the pain within his soul. Dimmesdale’s credibility gives him the advantage arguing with persuasiveness. He has personal knowledge since he’s a sinner himself and understands how to keep sins a secret deep inside his soul.
Chillingworth argues that a sinner should confess their sins and be punished for their wrongs rather than keeping it within themselves. Unlike Dimmesdale, Chillingworth feels that it’s important to let out a person’s sins rather than keeping it buried inside them and feeling the sense of pain, but also being punished for what they did wrong. Chillingworth argues that there should be a punishment because he wants to find and take revenge, therefore makes him only wanting to punish one in seek of revenge. Unlike Chillingworth, Dimmesdale argues with logic and personal experience.
Chillingworth’s purpose was to argue against Dimmesdale as him being a sinner and to take revenge on Dimmesdale. Chillingworth’s argument may not be as persuasive as Dimmesdale, but his argument was direct and straight forward using... [continues]
