The worst deaths are the one where you are alone and it’s a slow miserable process!
Hurst uses the color red to make a symbolic connection between the Scarlet Ibis and Doodle.
The first example he uses is when Doodle was born he say “Doodle was born with red skin.” If Doodle was born a normal skin color Doodle probably wouldn’t have been compared to the bird as much. The next example he uses is when Daddy say’s” It’s a Scarlet Ibis. Scarlet mean red and according to the description the bird was very red. If the bird had been a different color such as purple, there may not have been as much of a connection. The third example is when Hurst is describing the bird and Doodle after they both died, in both cases the blood. Blood is red and Doodle was covered in it. According to Hurst the whole shirt is bloody. Doodle and the bird shared the color red in different thing about them.
Both Doodle and the bird were sickly or weak. For example the way the bird had fell from the tree. No bird that was healthy would have falling like that because a bird would have flew. When the bird hit the ground its neck twitched twice and then it died. The second example, Doodle wasn’t expected to talk or crawl or even walk. It was a shock when he lived. Even though Doodle was weak, he became so weak on the way home he couldn’t go any further. If Doodle or the bird was healthy the stories outcome would have been a lot different.
Both Doodle and the bird died alone. Hurst states, “Doodle was under a bush and his shirt was bloody”. Doodle didn’t have any family and he died he was by himself. Doodle was scared and didn’t want his brother to leave him. The bird was also by himself. None of his native birds were around. Doodle was found dead by his brother, when brother went back to look for him. All Doodle had was Himself and a bush. Doodle and the bird both faced tragic deaths alone.
