Inner Space Cavern, 20 miles north of Austin, was originally found by the Texas Highway Department in 1963. In order to determine that the ground could support the weight of a highway overpass, they drilled several test holes; repeatedly the drill bit broke through into open cavities. The first human to enter the cave was lowered on a drill bit through an enlarged test hole. Inner Space Cavern is a highly decorated cave with over 4 miles of passage. The man-made entrance is the only access into the cave passages; however, the remains of 5 sinkholes called bone sinks, rich in fossil remains, have been identified. The cave tour only covers about 1/8th of the existing passage in Inner Space Cavern.…

The last time the results were made public was in 2003, when about 105 confirmed suicides took place. It is believed that more people die here but their corpses are never found. The local government has stopped publicizing the numbers in an attempt to minimize the association with suicide in the forest. In the 1970s the suicide had become so infamous that the Japanese government had started to do an annual sweeps of the forest to search and to also clear out the bodies. In 2002, 78 bodies were found within the forest, in addition to the previous record of 74 in 1998. When 2003 came, the rate went up to 100. In 2004, 108 bodies were found in the forest and in 2010, 247 people attempted suicide but only 54 of them succeeded. About 2,645 suicides were recorded in January of 2009, a 15 percent increase from the 2,305 in January 2008.…

What is the deepest place on Earth? The Mariana Trench of course. The Mariana trench is the deepest and most unknown place on Earth. The trench is 36,201 feet deep, which is very surprising compared to the average depth of an underwater trench, which is 12,200 feet deep. Many oceanographers are fascinated by the trench and have attempted dives to go to the bottom. In 1960 the U.S. Navy sent two divers in a manned vehicle to daringly dive deep into the trench. The trip took five long cold hours to reach the very bottom of the Mariana Trench. The world’s Deepest trench is not your average 12,000-foot deep hole.…

It's an island made entirely of seaweed, full of meerkats and freshwater ponds. It gets even stranger when dead fish rise to the surface of the ponds at night and disappear by morning. At first Pi thinks the island is a delusion, “I was getting used to my delusion. To make it last I refrained from putting a strain on it; when the lifeboat nudged the island, I did not move, only continued to dream.” But Martel spends too long with the island for it to just be a delusion. Pi describes the island very precisely. It just doesn't have the hazy feel of a delusion. One possibility is that the island represents some type of faith. When Pi first steps onto it he says, “My foot sank into the clear water and met the rubbery resistance of something flexible but solid. I put more weight down. The illusion would not give. I put the full weight of my foot. Still I did not sink. Still I did not believe.” Like Saint Peter trying to walk on water after he sees Jesus do it?…

Most commonly recognized as the fifth largest continent on this planet, this giant freezing mass is place over the South Pole with a total surface area of about fifteen million square kilometers. However, this figure fluctuates depending on the season, for example; it is approximately fourteen and a half million square kilometers in the summer.
