Scarborough Shoal is a horseshoe-shaped group of tiny islands 124 nautical miles (nm) west of Zambales. It is also known as Panatag Shoal in Philippines and Huangyan Island in China. However, there is a sovereignty dispute over the island between the two nations stated. The dispute began when eight Chinese fishing boats were found by Philippine authorities at the shoal last April 8, 2012. After that tensions are building up because of the incidents at the shoal which made the people worry despite the diplomatic approaches of the two nation . In any case, the sovereignty dispute over the Scarborough Shoal or Huangyan Island should not be resolved by any kind of brute force for the good of both nations especially the Philippines. Brute force will not help us on the dispute over Scarborough Shoal because it will greatly intensify the threat to the peaceful citizens caused by the commotions at the shoal because Philippines is literally and economically smaller than China and becaus of the dreadful consequences when brute force is applied. Had China and the Philippines based their ongoing dispute on security and threat, economic dimension, political and strategic military advancement, and territorial expansion over peace and security, commitment to mutual treaties and international laws, and plain respect, then, a countdown to another Falklands War must be ticking. The Scarborough Shoal Issue is causing some tension between our country and the People’s Republic of China. Our Internet websites have been hacked by some Chinese. Some newspapers have gone to the extent of claiming the Philippines as part of China. But this all started with some fishing vessels from China fished in the Scarborough Shoal, which the Philippines claims is part of our territory.
