THE CONSCIOUSNESS—RAISING APPROACH
The consciousness-Raising Approach focuses on aspects of grammar without using a rule on technical jargon.
Instead of trying to impart rules and principles directly as in traditional grammar lessons, it seeks to help learners discover for themselves a grammatical rule by focusing on aspects of the target structures.
It differs from pure communicative approaches by telling learners which structures are ungrammatical and proving the grammatical counterpart.
It asks the learner not only to “notice” but also to perform an operation of some kind. (Ruhterford, 1987)
It encourages focused communication activities. (Ellis, 1993)
SAMPLE LESSON PLAN
Vocabulary:
disinfectant- n. a chemical liquid that destroys bacteria
gunk- adj. informal, unpleasant sticky messy substance
swab- v. clean with a swab, an absorbent pad used for cleaning
E.coli- n. Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is a species of bacteria normally present in human intestines. Illness from E. coli may develop from consuming undercooked beef, unpasteurized milk, or from handling food without washing hands after changing diapers.
Hands-off- v. used as a warning not to touch or interfere with something
hands-on- v. involving or offering active participation rather than theory
